Top 10 Best African Safari Tours For Seniors 2027-2028

Narrated by George — audio edition, bedded with African wilderness sounds

Worried the drives will be too long, or that the bush is only for the young and fit? Neither is true — and after booking safaris for travellers in their sixties, seventies and eighties for years, we have learned exactly which trips get it right.

📋 Key Takeaways

  • Fly, do not drive. Light-aircraft hops from Maun or Nairobi reach camp in under an hour and remove the long gravel-road transfers that tire older travellers most.
  • Malaria-free is real. Madikwe, the Eastern Cape and the Kalahari give you the Big Five with no tablets — ideal if medication rules anti-malarials out.
  • Pace beats packing. Three to four nights in one reserve, with a rest day, beats racing through three countries in ten days.
  • Prices are honest. Comfort-first senior tours start near US$350 per person per night on safari, all-inclusive; we quote every trip in writing.
  • Solo travellers welcome. Our single seniors departures cap groups at six and cut the single supplement.

How we chose these ten safaris

We did not rank these by how they photograph. We ranked them by how they feel to a traveller who would rather not spend six hours on a dirt road, who climbs into a 4x4 more carefully than they did at forty, and who wants comfort without being wrapped in cotton wool. Every tour here is one we have sent real clients on and heard back about. For the wider thinking on comfort, access and health, our guide to the best African safaris for seniors goes deeper; this page is the shortlist of bookable trips for 2027 and 2028.

1. Fly-In Okavango Delta Senior Safari (no road transfers)

The Okavango Delta is the trip we recommend first for travellers who dread the driving. From Maun you fly 40 to 60 minutes by light aircraft straight onto a bush airstrip, then it is a short game drive to camp — no gravel road, no half-day transfer. Water-based camps such as Mombo and Chief's Camp sit on raised timber boardwalks that are flat and even underfoot, and much of the game viewing happens from a flat-bottomed boat or a gentle mokoro glide rather than a bouncing vehicle. Elephant, lion, leopard and red lechwe are the headline animals, and because the Delta is a maze of islands and channels, the wildlife often comes to within a few metres of a stationary boat. Three nights is plenty, and we usually pair it with a night in Maun or Johannesburg either side so you are never rushing for a flight.

2. Malaria-Free Madikwe Senior Safari (private vehicle)

Madikwe, on South Africa's border with Botswana, is our go-to malaria-free Big Five reserve for seniors. You reach it on a 75-minute charter flight from Johannesburg, which removes the four-hour road drive most operators sell, and once there we book you a private vehicle and guide so the day runs at your speed, not a stranger's. Lodges like Jaci's and Madikwe Hills have ground-level suites, ramps and plunge pools you can step into rather than climb. The reserve holds all of the Big Five plus wild dog, and sightings are reliable because the animals are well habituated to vehicles. Two to three nights works beautifully, and being malaria-free means no tablets — which matters when existing medication makes anti-malarials awkward. It pairs naturally with our wider safari tour packages if you want to add a city or the coast.

3. Eastern Cape Malaria-Free Senior Safari (short flight from Cape Town)

If you are already coming to Cape Town, the Eastern Cape is the easiest safari to add. It is a 55-minute flight to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), then a 45-to-90-minute drive to reserves such as Shamwari, Kwandwe and Amakhala. The terrain is gentle coastal bush with mild winters, it is malaria-free, and the lodges are among the most accessible in the country, with several offering rooms built for guests with limited mobility. You see the Big Five here, plus cheetah, in a landscape that feels open and unhurried. Two nights is enough for a first taste, three if you want to slow right down. We cover the region in more detail in our senior safari South Africa guide.

Fly-in Okavango Delta camps: flat boardwalks, boat-based game viewing and no long road transfers.

4. Cape Town + Malaria-Free Safari Senior Package

This is the trip we build most often for first-time visitors in their sixties and seventies. You start in Cape Town for a soft landing — the cable car up Table Mountain does the climbing for you, the Winelands are a gentle day of tasting and lunch, and the city gives your body time to adjust after a long flight. Then a short internal flight takes you to a malaria-free reserve, usually Madikwe or the Eastern Cape, for the Big Five. Spread over seven to ten nights with a rest day in the middle, it covers mountain, ocean, wine and wildlife without a single tiring transfer. Our Cape Town Safari Combo is the ready-made version, and we adjust the pacing to suit you.

5. Masai Mara Comfort Tented Senior Safari (Kenya)

Kenya's Masai Mara earns its place because the game viewing is the easiest in Africa — wide open plains where lion, elephant, giraffe and, from July to October, the Great Migration herds are in plain sight, often without leaving the vehicle. You fly 45 minutes from Nairobi onto a Mara airstrip, so there is no road slog. The word "tented" worries some travellers, but these are comfort tents with proper beds, en-suite bathrooms, hot water and electricity — closer to a hotel room under canvas. Camps like Angama Mara and Cottar's sit at ground level with short, flat walks. Three nights gives you five or six drives. We go into the camps and seasons in our senior safari Kenya guide.

6. Ngorongoro Crater Gentle-Pace Senior Safari (Tanzania)

The Ngorongoro Crater is the single best piece of easy game viewing in East Africa for an older traveller. Lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and flamingo all live on the enclosed crater floor, so you can see most of the Big Five in one unhurried morning rather than days of searching. Lodges sit on the crater rim, and the descent is a short drive down a well-made track. One point of honesty: the rim sits at around 2,300 metres, so the air is thin and nights are cold — if you have a heart or lung condition, tell us and we plan extra rest and a slower first day. Two nights on the rim is the comfortable choice, and it slots neatly into a longer northern-Tanzania trip covered in our senior safari Tanzania guide.

7. Victoria Falls + Zambezi River Cruise Senior Package

Victoria Falls is one of the few great wildlife-and-scenery experiences in Africa that asks almost nothing of your legs. The main viewpoints are paved, flat and railed, so you can watch the full width of the Falls at your own pace, and the classic sunset cruise on the Zambezi brings the wildlife to you — elephant on the banks, hippo in the shallows, birds everywhere — while you sit with a drink on a stable boat. Hotels such as The Victoria Falls Hotel and the Royal Livingstone are grand, central and step-light. Two nights here is the perfect gentle bookend to a safari, and it is the natural rail terminus too, which leads to the next trip.

8. Safari & Indian Ocean Beach Senior Wind-Down

Some of our favourite senior trips end not with another early game drive but on a warm, quiet beach. After three or four bush nights you take a short direct flight to the Indian Ocean coast — Zanzibar from the Tanzania parks, or the Mozambique islands from South Africa — and simply stop. The pace drops to nothing: late breakfasts, a book in the shade, a gentle swim in bath-warm water. For couples celebrating a big anniversary or a milestone birthday, this safari-and-sea rhythm gives you the wildlife you came for and the rest you actually need, with no demanding days at the end when energy is lowest.

Comfort tents in the Masai Mara: real beds, en-suite bathrooms and flat, short walks to the vehicle.

9. Rovos Rail Rail-and-Safari Senior Journey

The Rovos Rail train is, for many of our older couples, the most comfortable way to see Southern Africa. You unpack once into an en-suite cabin — some with a Victorian-style bath — and the landscape rolls past your window between Pretoria and Victoria Falls. Game drives and sightseeing stops are built into the route, so you step off for a few hours of wildlife and history, then step back onto a moving hotel. There are no repeated airport runs, no early packing, and meals are served at your table in a wood-panelled dining car. It is slow travel in the best sense, and it suits anyone who wants the romance of the journey as much as the destination. Our Rovos Rail Victoria Falls journey has the full route.

10. Single Seniors Small-Group Safari (over-70s gentle pace)

Travelling solo should not mean paying double or being left out, so we run dedicated single seniors departures. These are fixed-date small groups of no more than six guests, following a malaria-free route, with a reduced single supplement so your own comfortable room does not cost the earth. The pace is set deliberately for over-70s: one game drive in the cool of the morning, a long lunch and a proper afternoon rest, and an optional later outing only if you feel like it. You share the experience with others at the same stage of life, which makes dinners sociable without ever feeling like a coach tour. These dates are limited and popular, so we suggest booking nine to twelve months ahead.

How to pick the right senior safari for you

Start with honesty about three things: how far you are happy to travel between points, whether malaria-free matters for your health, and how much rest you need between activities. If drives are the worry, choose a fly-in trip — the Delta or the Mara. If medication rules out tablets, choose Madikwe, the Eastern Cape or the Kalahari. If you tire easily, build in rest days and keep to one or two reserves rather than chasing a checklist. And if you are travelling alone, the single seniors departure removes both the cost penalty and the isolation. There is no single best safari for everyone over sixty — there is a best one for you, and that is the conversation we have before quoting anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

A fly-in safari. Instead of four to eight hours on gravel roads, you take a short light-aircraft hop from the nearest town straight to an airstrip minutes from camp. The Okavango Delta from Maun and the Masai Mara from Nairobi are both reached in under an hour of flying. Camps are then chosen for flat boardwalks and short walks from room to vehicle. For travellers who find long transfers painful or tiring, this single decision changes the whole trip.

Three of our most-booked senior reserves carry no malaria risk: Madikwe and the Waterberg in northern South Africa, the Eastern Cape reserves near Gqeberha, and the Kalahari reserves such as Tswalu. All offer the Big Five or close to it, and none requires anti-malarial tablets, which some older travellers cannot take alongside existing medication. If you want a worry-free first safari or you are travelling with grandchildren, these are the regions we point you to first.

Our comfort-first senior tours start at about US$350 per person sharing per night on safari, all-inclusive of meals, game drives and park fees. Mid-range fly-in camps sit around US$450 to US$595, and the premier Delta and Kalahari lodges run from US$750 upward. A full seven-to-ten-night package including a city stay and internal flights usually lands between US$5,500 and US$14,000 per person depending on the camps chosen. International airfare to Africa is separate. We quote every trip in writing before you commit.

Yes. Our single seniors departures run as small fixed-date groups of no more than six guests, with a reduced single supplement so solo travellers are not penalised for a private room. The pace is set for over-70s: one game drive in the cool morning, a long lunch and rest, and an optional afternoon outing. You travel with others in the same stage of life, so meals are sociable without being hectic. These dates sell out early, so we recommend booking nine to twelve months ahead.

Less than most people expect. Game viewing happens from a vehicle or a boat, so you watch lions and elephants while seated. The main physical demands are climbing in and out of a raised 4x4 and short walks on uneven ground between your room and the main area. Many lodges have ground-floor rooms, ramps and a step-up stool for the vehicle. If you use a walking stick, have a hip or knee replacement, or tire easily, tell us and we match you to camps built for exactly that.

The dry winter months of June to October are ideal for most of Southern and East Africa. The air is cool and dry, there are few mosquitoes, the bush is thin so animals are easy to see, and wildlife gathers at shrinking waterholes. Days are mild and nights are cold, which suits travellers who dislike heat and humidity. The green months of November to March are quieter and cheaper, with newborn animals and birdlife, though some days are warm. We plan around your comfort, not just the calendar.

We suggest three to four nights in a single reserve for a first trip, often paired with two or three nights in a city such as Cape Town for a soft landing. That length gives you several game drives without the fatigue of constantly packing and moving. Trying to fit three countries into ten days is the most common mistake we talk seniors out of. Fewer stops, longer stays and a rest day or two make for a far better holiday.

Yes. The camps we use cater routinely for diabetic, low-salt, gluten-free, vegetarian and soft-food diets when told in advance, and kitchens are small enough to prepare meals individually. Rooms have a safe for medication and most have a fridge for anything needing cool storage. We pass your full medical and dietary notes to every lodge before arrival and carry them on your itinerary. Bring medication in your hand luggage in its original packaging, with a doctor's letter for anything unusual.

It is one of our favourites for older travellers. You unpack once into an en-suite cabin and the scenery comes to you, with game drives and sightseeing stops folded into the route between Pretoria and Victoria Falls. There are no early-morning transfers or repeated airport runs, meals are served at your table, and the pace is slow by design. For couples who want wildlife and history without the physical demands of a mobile camping safari, the train is hard to beat.

Send us a message on WhatsApp at +27 78 471 4852 or email reservations@privatetourscapetown.com with your rough dates, the number of travellers and any mobility or dietary needs. Remondy or one of our consultants replies personally, usually the same day, with two or three options and clear per-person prices. We hold space while you decide, take a deposit to confirm, and handle every internal flight, transfer and lodge booking for you. You travel; we carry the logistics.
