Why Visit Nyerere National Park (Selous)

Cruise the Rufiji River on a boatDrift past hippo podsExplore one of Africa's largest wildernessesOver 440 bird species

Nyerere National Park was gazetted in 2019 from the northern reaches of the Selous Game Reserve — a UNESCO World Heritage wilderness that ranks among the oldest and largest protected areas in Africa. At nearly 31,000 square kilometres it is a landscape on a scale that is hard to grasp: open savannah, borassus palm stands, groundwater forest and, threading through all of it, the mighty Rufiji River. The Rufiji is what sets this park apart. It fans out into a maze of channels, sandbanks and lakes — Tagalala, Manze, Nzerakera — that support crocodiles and hippo in extraordinary density and turn the safari into something rare in East Africa: a boat safari, drifting past drinking elephant and thousands of waterbirds as the sun sinks over the water. On land the park holds big herds of elephant and buffalo, good numbers of lion and leopard, greater kudu and sable, and one of the continent's most important strongholds for the endangered African wild dog. Because access is by light aircraft and camps are few, the wilderness feels enormous and almost private. Walking safaris, fly-camping and river cruises combine here into a slower, wilder, more sensory kind of safari — the antidote to the busy north.

The Beyond Africa Difference

We put you on the water — because the Rufiji is where this wilderness reveals itself.

Our river camps blend boat safaris, walking and drives so you meet the Selous from every angle, in a wilderness so vast you rarely see another soul.

Good to Know

Useful Nyerere National Park (Selous) Travel Tips

The practical details that make a real difference — gathered from years of sending travellers into this region.

Do the boat safari

The Rufiji boat safari is the reason to come. Choose a camp with river access and book a golden-hour cruise.

Fly in from Dar or Zanzibar

A 45-minute flight from Dar drops you straight into the park — quicker and far more scenic than the long road.

Malaria precautions

Nyerere is in a malaria zone, and the river country calls for extra care at dusk. Take prophylaxis and use repellent.

Mind the closures

Many camps close during the long rains from March to May. For the best conditions, plan for June to October.

Pack soft luggage

Light aircraft enforce soft-bag limits of around 15kg. Travel light in a soft duffel.

Add the coast

Nyerere pairs beautifully with Zanzibar or the mainland beaches for a bush-and-beach finish — we arrange it as one unbroken journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nyerere National Park (Selous) Safari FAQ

Yes, essentially. Nyerere National Park was created in 2019 from the northern, wildlife-rich part of the Selous Game Reserve. Most camps and the classic Rufiji safari areas now fall within Nyerere, though many travellers still know it by the Selous name.

The Rufiji River. Nyerere is one of the very few East African parks where you can take a boat safari, drifting past hippo, crocodiles and drinking elephants. Combined with walking and game drives, it offers a broader range of activities than most northern parks.

June to October, the dry season, is prime — wildlife gathers on the shrinking river and lakes, and both land and water safaris are at their best. The green season is quieter and good for birding, but many camps close during the long rains from March to May.

Yes — it is the park's signature experience. Boat safaris on the Rufiji River and its lakes bring you close to hippo pods, crocodiles and waterbirds, and the sunset cruises are among the most memorable moments of any Tanzanian safari.

Nyerere has four of the Big Five — elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo — in strong numbers. Rhino once occurred in the Selous but are effectively gone, so it is not a Big Five park; its strengths are big herds, predators and the river.

The easiest way is a short light-aircraft flight from Dar es Salaam (about 45 minutes) or Zanzibar (about an hour) to an airstrip inside the park. Road and rail options exist but the flight is the standard, scenic choice.

Yes. The greater Selous ecosystem is one of the most important strongholds in Africa for the endangered African wild dog, and sightings of hunting packs are a real highlight, especially in the dry season.

No. It lies in a malaria zone. Prophylaxis is recommended — consult your doctor before travelling and use repellent, particularly around the water at dusk.

Perfectly. Its proximity to Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar makes it the ideal bush leg before an Indian-Ocean beach finish — the classic southern-Tanzania bush-and-beach itinerary.

We design private fly-in itineraries with hand-picked river camps and expert guides, blending boat safaris, walking and game drives, and usually pairing Nyerere with Ruaha or the Zanzibar coast.
