The Great Migration is the largest movement of animals on Earth — over two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle travelling in a continuous loop across the Serengeti and Masai Mara. Witnessing this spectacle is the ultimate bucket-list safari experience. Here's how to time your visit perfectly.

The Migration Calendar

  • January–March (Southern Serengeti): Calving season on the Ndutu plains. Up to 8,000 wildebeest are born daily. Predators gather for the feast — lion, cheetah, and hyena are everywhere.
  • April–May (Central Serengeti): The herds begin moving northwest. Long grass and green season photography. Fewer tourists.
  • June–July (Western Corridor): The Grumeti River crossings. Massive Nile crocodiles await in the shallows. Dramatic and intense.
  • August–October (Northern Serengeti / Mara): The famous Mara River crossings — the most dramatic wildlife event on Earth. Thousands of wildebeest plunge into crocodile-infested waters.
  • November–December (Eastern Serengeti): The herds circle back south as the short rains begin. A quieter period with excellent game viewing.

Where to Stay

The Serengeti offers everything from classic tented camps to luxurious lodges. Mobile camps that move with the migration are the most immersive option, placing you in the heart of the action.

Fixed lodges in the central Seronera area offer year-round game viewing with excellent resident predator populations. Northern camps near Kogatende are best for the Mara River crossings (August–October).

Beyond the Migration

The Serengeti is spectacular year-round, migration or not. It has one of the highest concentrations of lions in Africa, along with cheetah, leopard, elephant, and enormous hippo pools.

Hot air balloon safaris at dawn over the endless plains are a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Serengeti is also home to fascinating Maasai culture — a village visit offers insight into one of Africa's most iconic communities.

Migration Tips

  • The migration is unpredictable. Position yourself in the right region for the month, then let nature surprise you.
  • Book northern Serengeti camps 6–12 months ahead for August–October river crossings.
  • A hot air balloon safari costs ~$500 per person but is absolutely worth it.
  • Combine with the Ngorongoro Crater (the world's largest intact caldera) for a complete Tanzania safari.
  • Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry to Tanzania.
