Victoria Falls: The Smoke That Thunders — Complete Guide

Plan your visit to one of the Seven Natural Wonders — best viewing points, adventure activities, Zimbabwe vs Zambia side, and when to visit for the most dramatic flows.

Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya — 'The Smoke That Thunders' — Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and arguably the most awe-inspiring waterfall on the planet. Straddling the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, the falls span 1,708 metres wide and plunge 108 metres into the Batoka Gorge. This guide covers everything you need for an unforgettable visit.

Zimbabwe Side vs Zambia Side

The Zimbabwe side (Victoria Falls town) offers the best panoramic views of the falls, with a well-maintained rainforest trail providing 16 viewpoints. About 75% of the falls face Zimbabwe.

The Zambia side (Livingstone) offers a closer, more immersive experience — you can walk to the very edge of the falls at Knife Edge Bridge. The Devil's Pool (a natural infinity pool on the lip of the falls) is accessible only from Zambia, during low water season (September–December).

Our recommendation: visit both sides. Day visas are available for crossing the border at the Victoria Falls Bridge.

Adventure Activities

  • Helicopter Flight: The 'Flight of Angels' gives you a bird's-eye view of the falls and Batoka Gorge. A 15-minute flight is unforgettable.
  • Bungee Jump: 111 metres off the Victoria Falls Bridge, above the churning Zambezi. One of the world's most scenic bungee spots.
  • White Water Rafting: Grade 5 rapids on the Zambezi below the falls. An absolute rush — operating mainly during low water season.
  • Sunset Cruise: A gentle cruise on the upper Zambezi at golden hour. Hippos, elephants on the banks, and sundowners included.
  • Devil's Pool: Swim on the very edge of the falls (Zambia side, September–December). Bucket list material.

When to Visit

Peak flow (February–May): The falls are at their most powerful and the spray rises hundreds of metres. Visibility can be reduced by the mist, but the sheer force is breathtaking.

Medium flow (June–August): Excellent balance of visibility and power. The best all-round period for photography.

Low water (September–December): The rock face is partially exposed, but Devil's Pool is open, rafting is at its best, and the views are crystal clear.

Combining with Safari

Victoria Falls pairs perfectly with safari destinations. Chobe National Park (Botswana) is just 80km away — a day trip or 2-night add-on. Hwange National Park (Zimbabwe's largest) is 3 hours south.

Many of our guests combine Victoria Falls with a Kruger/Sabi Sands safari, Okavango Delta, or a broader Southern Africa circuit.

Victoria Falls Tips

  • Bring a waterproof phone pouch for the Zimbabwe viewpoints — the spray is like standing in a rainstorm.
  • Wear shoes with grip. The rainforest trail gets slippery from the spray.
  • A KAZA UniVisa covers both Zimbabwe and Zambia, making border crossing easy.
  • The falls are floodlit during full moon — a lunar rainbow (moonbow) is possible.
  • Victoria Falls town is safe and walkable. Restaurants and shops are within easy reach of most hotels.
