Best Uganda Safari Lodges — Bwindi Gorillas & Queen Elizabeth

Uganda is the Pearl of Africa — Winston Churchill's phrase, and still the perfect one. Few countries pack so much into so small a space: misty mountains cloaking half the world's remaining mountain gorillas, forests alive with chimpanzees, savannahs with tree-climbing lions, and a stretch of the Nile thundering through a rift. It is lush, green, welcoming and astonishingly biodiverse, and it delivers the single most moving wildlife encounter on Earth — an hour spent sitting quietly among a family of wild mountain gorillas.

This guide covers Uganda's finest lodges — on the edge of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, inside the forest itself, and in the Big Game country of Queen Elizabeth National Park — with what makes each special, what they cost, and everything you need to know to plan a gorilla trek and safari.

Uganda — misty forests, mountain gorillas and the most biodiverse safari in Africa.

Quick Answer

The best safari lodges in Uganda are Bwindi Lodge and Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp on the edge of (and inside) the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Mahogany Springs for value at Buhoma, and Mweya Safari Lodge in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Uganda's gorilla permit is USD 800 — around half Rwanda's price.

Expect lodge rates of $250–$800+ per person per night, plus the gorilla permit. Uganda blends gorillas, chimps and Big Game. Explore our luxury African safari packages or speak to a Uganda specialist.

Meeting the Mountain Gorillas

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, and trekking to see them is Uganda's defining experience. After an early briefing, you set out with rangers and trackers into ancient, tangled rainforest, following the movements of a habituated gorilla family. When you find them, you have one precious hour in their company — watching a silverback rest, youngsters tumble and mothers cradle their infants, often just metres away. It is profound, humbling and unforgettable.

The Best Bwindi Gorilla Lodges

Bwindi Lodge

Volcanoes Safaris' Bwindi Lodge is the finest gorilla base in Uganda. Its warm timber bandas are perched on a hillside gazing straight across a tea plantation into the Impenetrable Forest, with the trailhead just minutes away. A cosy lounge, roaring fire, forest-view bathtubs and heartfelt community engagement make it the perfect place to return to after a trek. From $700 per person per night.

Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp

Uniquely, this intimate camp sits inside the Bwindi forest itself, at Buhoma — the only lodge within the national park. Its eight tents are wrapped in jungle, and gorillas, along with other forest creatures, sometimes wander through the camp. It is the most immersive gorilla-trekking base in the country, deep in the green heart of Bwindi. From $650 per person per night.

Mahogany Springs

Also at Buhoma, Mahogany Springs offers some of the best value in Bwindi. Its spacious suites, each with a large veranda overlooking the Munyaga River, and its warm, personal service have made it a firm favourite. A superb, comfortable base for the trek without the premium price tag. From $300 per person per night.

Queen Elizabeth & the Big Game

Mweya Safari Lodge

Uganda is far more than gorillas, and Mweya Safari Lodge is the classic base for Queen Elizabeth National Park. Set on a peninsula above the Kazinga Channel — a waterway teeming with hippo, elephant, buffalo and prolific birdlife — the lodge offers boat safaris, game drives and access to the Ishasha sector famous for its tree-climbing lions. A pool, sweeping views and comfortable rooms make it a wonderful savannah contrast to the forest. From $250 per person per night.

Chimps, the Nile & More

Uganda's biodiversity rewards a longer trip. Kibale Forest offers the finest chimpanzee tracking in Africa; Murchison Falls in the north delivers dramatic Nile scenery and Big Game; and the crater lakes and the Rwenzori Mountains add further adventure. A classic Uganda itinerary strings together gorillas in Bwindi, chimps in Kibale and Big Game in Queen Elizabeth over 8–10 days.

Costs & How to Combine

Uganda offers exceptional value — gorilla permits at half Rwanda's price, and a huge range of experiences. It combines naturally with Rwanda for a two-country primate safari, and pairs well with a Kenyan or Tanzanian Big Game safari, or a Zanzibar beach finish, to round out an East African journey.

Planning Your Uganda Safari

Secure gorilla permits and lodges early, especially for the drier trekking months (June–September, December–February). Decide how much you want to add beyond gorillas — chimps, Big Game, the Nile — and we will build the route around it.

Frequently Asked Questions

For gorilla trekking in Bwindi, Bwindi Lodge (Volcanoes Safaris) is the finest — eco-luxurious bandas gazing straight into the Impenetrable Forest, minutes from the trailhead. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is the only camp set inside the forest itself, where gorillas sometimes wander through. Mahogany Springs offers superb value at Buhoma, and Mweya Safari Lodge is the classic base for Queen Elizabeth National Park. Uganda blends gorillas, chimps and Big Game like nowhere else.

A Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs USD 800 per person (2026), which is roughly half the price of Rwanda's permit — one of the main reasons Uganda is such popular value. The permit includes park entry, ranger guides and one hour with a habituated gorilla family. Lodges around Bwindi run from about $250 per person per night for good comfort to $800+ for the finest eco-luxury camps. A gorilla habituation experience (four hours with the gorillas) is also available at a higher permit price.

A reasonable level of fitness helps, but treks are graded and allocated on the day to suit ability. Some gorilla families are reached in one to two hours; others require a strenuous half-day hike through steep, muddy, densely-forested terrain — Bwindi is 'impenetrable' for a reason. Porters are available (and highly recommended) to carry your daypack and help on steep sections. The reward — sitting metres from a wild silverback — is worth every step.

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but the drier seasons — June to September and December to February — offer easier, less muddy trails and are considered the best times. The wetter months bring lush forest and fewer visitors, though trails are more challenging. Permits should be secured well in advance for peak months, as daily numbers are strictly limited to protect the gorillas.

A great deal. Uganda is exceptionally biodiverse — you can track chimpanzees in Kibale Forest, take a boat safari on the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park (superb for hippo, elephant and birds), look for the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, and see classic savannah Big Game. Murchison Falls in the north offers dramatic river scenery and more wildlife. Many itineraries combine gorillas, chimps and a Big Game park.

Some do — Mweya Safari Lodge in Queen Elizabeth has a pool overlooking the Kazinga Channel, and several savannah lodges offer them. The gorilla lodges around Bwindi focus more on cosy fireplaces, forest views and hot showers after a muddy trek than on pools, given the cool, misty highland climate. Comfort, warmth and a great soak after trekking are the priorities there.

Many travellers do, and the two pair beautifully. Rwanda offers easier access and shorter treks in the Volcanoes National Park, while Uganda offers more affordable permits, a wider range of wildlife and experiences (chimps, Big Game, boat safaris), and the vast Bwindi gorilla population. A combined primate safari, crossing between the two countries, delivers the ultimate Great Lakes wildlife journey.
