The quick take
Alfajiri is not a hotel. It is three private villas on a coral headland above Diani Beach, each one rented as an exclusive-use house with its own pool, its own chef and its own butler. You do not share a restaurant. You do not share a bar. The only people in your villa are the people you brought with you and the staff who look after you.
The property has been owner-managed by the same Italian-Kenyan family since the 1990s, and you feel that in the detail — the food, the flowers, the way the butler remembers your drink order by the second morning. It is the kind of place where you arrive planning three nights and leave wishing you had booked five.
The three villas
Cliff Villa — four bedrooms, sleeps nine
The Cliff Villa sits on top of the coral wall, raised above the reef. The centrepiece is the Turret Suite at the top — a round bedroom with arched windows on three sides giving a 270-degree panorama over the Indian Ocean. It has been called one of the most romantic bedrooms in the world, and for once the label fits. The room is genuinely round, the windows are genuinely open, and the reef breaks genuinely below you.
Below the turret are three more bedrooms, a shared lounge, and an infinity pool that runs to the cliff edge. The villa suits honeymooners who want the turret, or families who want the full four bedrooms and the drama of the height.
Garden Villa — four bedrooms, sleeps ten
The Garden Villa sits back from the cliff in tropical gardens, with a wide lawn running through the palms down to the beach. It is the biggest of the three — four en-suite bedrooms, a jacuzzi, a large veranda under a makuti thatch roof, and a private infinity pool. The feel is more relaxed than the Cliff Villa, more space to spread out, more room for children to run. If you are travelling as a group of six to ten adults, this is the one.
Beach Villa — three bedrooms, sleeps six
The Beach Villa is the most intimate. Three bedrooms among tall palms, an overflowing pool, and a thatched terrace a few steps from the sand. The interiors lean into a coastal African style — ivory Danish floors, handcrafted furniture, local fabrics — and the villa reads as a beach house rather than a grand estate. It suits couples or a small family who want simplicity and proximity to the water.
The food
Each villa has its own chef, and the food is one of the reasons people come back. The menus run Mediterranean and Italian-African: fresh lobster, red snapper, prawns and calamari off the Diani boats, with European ingredients flown in for the rest. There is no set menu. The chef asks what you want, adjusts for allergies and preferences, and cooks it wherever you want to eat — the terrace, the pool edge, the lawn, the beach. Breakfast drifts into brunch. Lunch is light and long. Dinner runs to three or four courses, usually with candles and the sound of the ocean.
All meals, house wines, premium spirits and soft drinks are included in the rate. Champagne is an extra.
The service
Alfajiri runs roughly 20 to 30 staff across the three villas. Your butler handles everything — drinks, laundry, bookings, transfers, packing if you ask — and has probably been at the property for a decade. A nanny is assigned to each villa automatically, regardless of children. Every guest gets a daily massage, included in the rate, and the nearby Uzuri Spa has a gym and a sauna you can use at will.
The owner-managed model means there is no corporate layer between you and the team. If something is wrong, it gets fixed the same morning. Most of the TripAdvisor reviews that mention Alfajiri's service use the word "family" — as in, the staff feel like part of yours.
The location
Diani Beach runs for 17 kilometres along Kenya's south coast, roughly 30 kilometres south of Mombasa. The sand is white, the water is warm year-round, and the reef sits close enough offshore to break the swell and create a calm lagoon for swimming. Alfajiri sits on the northern end, on a raised coral headland that gives the Cliff Villa and the Garden Villa their elevation.
Transfers from Ukunda airstrip take ten minutes. From Moi International Airport in Mombasa, it is about 90 minutes by road, crossing the Likoni ferry (or, if your timing is flexible, using the new Dongo Kundu bypass road to avoid the queue). Scheduled flights connect Ukunda to Nairobi, the Masai Mara and Lamu daily.
Activities
This is a beach property, not a game lodge, so the rhythm is different. Mornings might be a snorkelling trip to the reef on a traditional ngalawa canoe (included), or a walk along the sand while it is still cool. Afternoons might be kitesurfing — Diani is one of the best spots on the East African coast for it — or deep-sea fishing for marlin and sailfish, or a dhow excursion south to Kisite Marine National Park where you can swim with dolphins and, between October and February, whale sharks.
On land, the Leisure Lodge golf course is 18 holes and ten minutes away. The Colobus Trust runs a conservation programme for the Angolan colobus monkeys that live in the coastal forest canopy above Diani — worth a morning visit. And if you want wildlife beyond the reef, Shimba Hills National Reserve is a 40-minute drive: coastal forest, sable antelope (the only population in Kenya) and views over the Indian Ocean from the hilltop. Tsavo East is a longer day trip but doable.
Combining Alfajiri with a bush safari
Most guests pair Alfajiri with a Masai Mara or Amboseli safari — four or five nights tracking big cats and elephant, then a flight to the coast and three or four nights doing nothing but eating well and watching the tide. The scheduled flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi or from the Mara conservancies to Ukunda take about 90 minutes, so the transfer is painless. We build these bush-then-beach itineraries regularly and handle the flights, the timing and the luggage logistics.
A ten-day Kenya itinerary of Mara + Alfajiri is one of the cleanest luxury combinations in East Africa — outstanding game viewing followed by first-rate beach, no long drives, no unnecessary hotel nights in Nairobi.
Conservation
Alfajiri charges a mandatory nightly conservation donation — USD 10 per adult and teenager, USD 5 per child — that funds the Alfajiri Foundation. The foundation supports the Diani Turtle Watch (nesting-site protection for green and hawksbill turtles on the beach), the Colobus Trust (monkey corridor protection), and community education projects in the Ukunda area. It is a small charge on a bill this size, and it goes directly to the programmes rather than through a larger NGO.
Rates — 2026 and 2027 guide
Alfajiri prices per person per night, based on a minimum occupancy of two adults for the Cliff and Beach villas and four adults for the Garden Villa. The more guests you bring, the lower the per-person rate.
As a guide for 2026: the Cliff Villa runs from about USD 650 (green season, seven or eight guests) to USD 1,030 (high season, two guests). The Garden Villa runs from about USD 755 (green season, seven or eight guests) to USD 920 (high season, four guests). The Beach Villa runs from about USD 650 (green season, five or six guests) to USD 865 (high season, two guests).
For 2027, rates increase by roughly 7 to 10 percent across the board. The Cliff Villa in high season for two guests moves to about USD 1,100.
Children aged 2 to 12 are charged at USD 350 per night (2026) or USD 300 per night (2027) in their own room. Teenagers 13 to 19 are USD 500. Infants under two stay free.
A Christmas and New Year supplement of USD 300 per person per night applies from 22 December to 6 January, with a seven-night minimum stay and higher minimum-occupancy requirements (six adults for Cliff and Garden, four for Beach).
High season runs January to mid-April, mid-June to October, and December to early January. Green season is mid-April to May, early June, and November.
How to book Alfajiri Villas through Beyond Africa Safaris
We work with Alfajiri directly. Tell us which villa, your dates, the number of adults and children, and if you'd like to combine it with a bush safari or fly in from Nairobi. We handle the booking, the flights, the transfers and any add-ons (fishing, diving, Shimba Hills). No middlemen, no booking fees — our rate is the same you would get going direct, and we can build a full Kenya itinerary around it.
