Kapama Private Game Reserve is one of the easiest ways into a genuine Big Five safari — 15,000 hectares of private bushveld in the greater Kruger, ten minutes from Hoedspruit and under an hour from Johannesburg in a light aircraft. A well-built package is what turns a scatter of lodges, flights and transfers into one relaxed holiday. The reserve is private and fenced, so the game drives are quiet and never queued, and it carries all of the Big Five across open plains, riverine thickets and seasonal waterholes. Four lodges and a dedicated elephant camp let one reserve work for a young family, a honeymoon and a milestone celebration without ever feeling like the same trip twice.
We have compared and ranked the best Kapama safari packages for 2026 and 2027 — private, luxury, all-inclusive, family, honeymoon, fly-in and combination itineraries. Each is a real, bookable trip with honest pricing. For the reserve and its lodges in depth — what to expect, which camp suits whom and how the game viewing works — see our Kapama Private Game Reserve guide. This page is about the packages themselves: what they cost, what is included and how to choose.
How We Ranked These Packages
Each package was weighed across five things: wildlife access (Big Five density and the character of the drives), accommodation standard (the lodge, its location and its guiding), inclusions (how genuinely all-inclusive the rate is — suite, meals, drinks, drives and transfers), experience match (whether it fits families, couples, first-timers or combination travellers) and value (what you receive at the price). The order reflects the best overall fit per traveller type, not simply the dearest villa.
1. Kapama River Lodge Big Five Safari — 3 Days
Best for: First-time safari-goers, couples and families who want the full Big Five experience at a sensible price.
River Lodge is the reserve largest and most sociable camp, and this three-day package is the one most people should start with. Two nights give you four game drives — dawn and late afternoon, each with a ranger and tracker — and a real chance at lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and the harder-won leopard. The lodge sits on the riverbank a short drive from Hoedspruit Eastgate, so travel in is simple, and between drives there is a spa, a pool and a reptile centre to fill the warm middle of the day. Children are welcome from four, with their own programme and early suppers.
At a fully-inclusive rate this is the best-value genuine Big Five safari on the reserve — the same wildlife the flagship guests see, on the same drives, at a price that leaves room for Cape Town or the Panorama Route alongside it. Full itinerary on our 3-Day Kapama River Lodge Big Five Safari page, and the reserve detail is in our Kapama Private Game Reserve guide.
Best season: Year-round; May–September for the strongest waterhole game. Ideal for: First-timers, couples, families with children from four. Highlights: Four game drives, spa, reptile centre, childrens programme, short transfer from Hoedspruit. From: around US$2,350pp for three days.
2. Ultra-Luxury Karula Private Pool Villa Fly-In — 4 Days
Best for: The finest Kapama has, with a short fly-in and a heated private pool at every villa.
Karula is the reserve flagship and the reason a fly-in makes sense. A light aircraft from Johannesburg lands you near the lodge in under an hour, and from there it is twelve freestanding villas, each with its own heated pool, set apart for privacy and finished to a standard that earned the lodge a Michelin Key. Over three nights you take six game drives with a private ranger and tracker, with a wine cellar, a spa and long, unhurried days between the Big Five at dawn and dusk.
This is the package to choose when the stay matters as much as the sightings — honeymoons, anniversaries, a milestone trip where privacy and comfort are the point. Full itinerary on our 4-Day Kapama Karula Private Pool Villa Fly-In page. For how Karula compares with the other camps, see our Kapama Private Game Reserve guide.
Best season: Year-round; May–September for crisp mornings and the best big-game viewing. Ideal for: Luxury travellers, honeymooners, milestone trips. Highlights: Short fly-in, heated private pools, Michelin Key, wine cellar, six game drives. From: around US$7,950pp for four days.
3. Kapama Southern Camp Family Safari — 5 Days
Best for: Families with young children and multi-generational groups who want space and no age limit on drives.
Southern Camp is the reserve family lodge, and this five-day package gives a family four full nights to settle into the rhythm of the bush. The family villas have their own private pool and enough room for parents and children together, and there is no minimum age for game drives, so even young children can go out with a ranger who pitches the sighting to their level. Eight game drives over the stay mean plenty of chances at the Big Five without rushing, and the warm middle of the day is for the pool, the childrens programme or a half-day at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre nearby.
Five days is the length that lets a family actually relax rather than pack and unpack — long enough for the children to find their feet and for the adults to have slow mornings and proper game viewing. A hot-air balloon flight over the Lowveld can be added for older children and grandparents. Full itinerary on our 5-Day Kapama Southern Camp Family Safari page.
Best season: Year-round; summer school holidays for warm days and newborn game. Ideal for: Families with young children, multi-generational groups. Highlights: Family villas with private pool, no minimum age, eight drives, HESC visit, balloon option. From: around US$4,200pp for five days.
4. Honeymoon & Romantic Fly-In Escape — 4 Days
Best for: Couples who want privacy, a private pool and unhurried game drives for two.
For a honeymoon, Karula is the easy answer — a private villa with its own heated pool, a short fly-in so you lose no time travelling, and three nights built around slow mornings, long golden-hour drives and dinners set up wherever you like them. Six game drives over the stay give you the Big Five as the backdrop rather than a checklist, and the wine cellar, spa and the privacy of a freestanding villa do the rest. Couples who prefer a quieter, more classic-bush feel can swap to the adults-only Buffalo Camp, where the atmosphere is calmer still.
Because Kapama is a short hop from Johannesburg, it is an easy and relaxed safari leg of a South African honeymoon — bush first, then Cape Town, the Winelands or a beach finish. We tailor the romantic details privately. Full itinerary on our 4-Day Kapama Karula Private Pool Villa Fly-In page, which we shape for couples.
Best season: Year-round; autumn and spring for mild, clear days. Ideal for: Honeymooners, couples, anniversaries. Highlights: Private-pool villa, short fly-in, private dinners, adults-only option at Buffalo Camp. From: around US$7,950pp for four days at Karula.
5. Cape Town & Kapama Fly-In Combination — 7 Days
Best for: First-time visitors who want South Africa greatest city paired with a Big Five finish.
This is our most popular combination, and the one most first-time visitors should book. Seven days opens with three nights in Cape Town — Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula drive to the penguins and Cape Point, and a day in the Winelands — then a flight north to Kapama for three nights of Big Five game drives in the greater Kruger. The two halves balance each other: city, coast and food first, then the quiet of the bush at dawn and dusk, with the flights and transfers handled so the week flows as one trip.
It is the single best way to see the breadth of the country in one visit, and it adapts easily — add the Garden Route, stretch the bush leg, or lift the Kapama nights to Karula for a more luxurious finish. Full itinerary on our 7-Day Cape Town and Kapama Fly-In Safari page.
Best season: October–April for warm Cape weather; year-round for the safari. Ideal for: First-time South Africa visitors, couples, families wanting one complete trip. Highlights: Table Mountain, the Peninsula, the Winelands and three nights of Big Five at Kapama, flights included. From: around US$4,950pp for seven days.
6. Adults-Only Big Five Escape at Buffalo Camp — 4 Days
Best for: Couples and friends who want a quiet, classic-bush safari with no children on the drives.
Buffalo Camp is the reserve adults-only lodge, open to guests from sixteen, and it has the calmest atmosphere on Kapama — tented-style suites spread along a riverbed, fewer guests and a more traditional safari feel. A four-day package gives you three nights and six game drives, with the same Big Five wildlife the other camps see but a quieter lodge to return to, where mornings and dinners are unhurried and adult. It suits couples who are not after the full flagship rate of Karula but want somewhere grown-up and peaceful.
The camp pairs well with a Cape Town or Panorama Route add-on, and we can lift a couple to Karula for a night as a treat within the same trip. We build it privately around your dates. Full itinerary on our Kapama Big Five safari page, which we tailor to the adults-only camp and extend to four days.
Best season: Year-round; winter for the best game viewing around water. Ideal for: Couples, friends, travellers wanting a child-free lodge. Highlights: Adults-only from sixteen, riverside tented suites, six drives, classic-bush calm. From: around US$3,100pp for four days.
7. All-Inclusive Fly-In from Johannesburg — 4 Days
Best for: Travellers short on time who want a complete Big Five safari without a long drive.
Not every trip has room for a road transfer. This four-day fly-in is built for travellers passing through Johannesburg — on business, or between Cape Town and Victoria Falls — who want a genuine Big Five safari fitted neatly into the dates they have. A scheduled flight to Hoedspruit Eastgate, under an hour in the air, puts you on the reserve the same morning, and three nights with six game drives, all meals and selected drinks give you the full fully-inclusive experience before you fly out again. We place you at River Lodge or Southern Camp for value, or Karula if you want the stay to be the point.
The package is about ease: it slots around existing flights, keeps the safari compact without feeling rushed, and handles every transfer. Full itinerary on our Kapama fly-in safari page, which we match to your chosen lodge and budget.
Best season: Year-round. Ideal for: Business travellers, stopover guests, first-timers testing safari. Highlights: Under-an-hour flight from Johannesburg, six drives, fully inclusive, flexible routing. From: around US$2,600–US$7,950pp for four days by lodge.
8. Multi-Generational Family Villa Week — 5 Days
Best for: Three generations travelling together who want one lodge, one table and space for everyone.
When grandparents, parents and children travel as one party, the family villas at Southern Camp are the answer. A five-day package takes a whole villa — private pool, room for the family together, and drives shaped so that very young children and older grandparents can both go out comfortably. Four nights give everyone time to settle, with the childrens programme keeping younger ones happy while the adults have slower mornings, and a half-day at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre or a Lowveld balloon flight to break up the week.
It is the relaxed way to do a milestone family trip — one reserve, one lodge, no packing between camps, and genuine Big Five game viewing that works for every age. We handle the flights and transfers and build the week around your group. Full itinerary on our 5-Day Kapama Southern Camp Family Safari page, which we take on an exclusive-villa basis.
Best season: Year-round; summer school holidays for the warm pool weather. Ideal for: Multi-generational families, group celebrations. Highlights: Exclusive family villa, private pool, no minimum age, HESC and balloon options. From: around US$4,200pp for five days.

How to Choose the Right Kapama Package
Start with your travellers. Families with young children do best at Southern Camp, with its family villas and no age limit on drives; first-timers, couples and value-minded families suit River Lodge; couples wanting quiet should look at the adults-only Buffalo Camp; and honeymooners or milestone trips belong at Karula. Then choose your length: three nights is the sweet spot for a first safari, four or five for families and honeymoons, and a seven-day frame if you are pairing Kapama with Cape Town. Finally, fix your dates early for the festive and school-holiday peaks.
Every package on this page is built privately by Beyond Africa Safaris — you are never locked into a rigid group itinerary, and we handle each flight, transfer and reservation across the whole trip.
