The Masai Mara is Africa's greatest big-cat country — a rolling sea of golden grassland in south-western Kenya that holds the continent's densest populations of lion, cheetah and leopard, and forms the northern, Kenyan stage of the Great Migration. From July to October, nearly two million wildebeest and zebra pour north across the Mara River in the crossings that have become the most famous wildlife spectacle on Earth. It is also served by some of the finest safari camps and lodges in all of Africa: glass-fronted escarpment suites, exclusive conservancy camps, vintage explorer tents and classic river lodges. Where you stay shapes the entire safari — which is why choosing the right camp, in the right area, at the right time of year, matters as much in the Mara as anywhere on the continent.

This guide ranks the 10 best luxury safari camps in the Masai Mara for 2026 and 2027 across all of the Mara's great areas: the Mara Triangle and the Oloololo Escarpment in the west, the Masai Mara National Reserve and the Mara River itself, and the great northern conservancies — Olare Motorogi, Mara North and Olderkesi. It covers every style of accommodation — luxury tented camps, exclusive conservancy camps and classic lodges — so you can match the experience to your trip. Each camp is a real place we book, with genuine photographs and an honest assessment of what it delivers and who it suits. For package pricing and ready-made itineraries, see our Masai Mara safari packages guide; to understand the conservancies, our Masai Mara private conservancies guide; and for a country-wide view, our best luxury safari lodges in Kenya guide.

How We Ranked These Camps & Lodges

Each camp and lodge was assessed across five criteria: location & wildlife access (which part of the Mara it sits in, game density and proximity to the river crossings), accommodation (the size, design and genuine comfort of the tents, suites or rooms), service & cuisine (the standard of guiding, hosting and food), experience match (whether it best suits couples, families, photographers or first-timers) and value (what you genuinely receive at the price). These are not the cheapest options in the Mara — for the budget tier, see our affordable Kenya safari lodges guide. They are the best luxury camps and lodges, area by area and tier by tier, for travellers who want the Masai Mara at its finest.

1. Angama Mara — Mara Triangle / Oloololo Escarpment

Best for: The finest luxury safari camp in the Masai Mara — glass-fronted suites suspended on the escarpment, with the greatest view in the Mara and near-private access to the Mara Triangle.

Angama Mara is the camp every other Mara address is measured against. It sits high on the Oloololo Escarpment — the great wall of rock above the Mara Triangle, on the very site where Out of Africa was filmed — and its glass-fronted tented suites look straight out over the plains hundreds of metres below, a view with few equals in all of Africa. The Mara Triangle, the quieter and best-managed third of the national reserve, lies directly beneath the camp, and Angama's guides know every corner of it; the Mara River and its crossings are within easy reach in season.

The suites are vast and light, floor-to-ceiling glass on the escarpment side, with hand-crafted Kenyan furnishings, a reading chair in the window and the plains laid out like a map. There is a swimming pool on the edge of the escarpment, a photographic studio, a beaded-boutique and a safari-picnic in the Out of Africa koppie that has become a signature. Service is warm, personal and genuinely world-class. For travellers who want the single best luxury safari camp in the Masai Mara — and the most extraordinary view on any safari in Kenya — Angama Mara has no equal. See our full Angama Mara review for the detail.

Location: Oloololo Escarpment, above the Mara Triangle (western Masai Mara). Style: Glass-fronted tented suites on the escarpment. Best for: Bucket-list occasions, couples, photographers, those seeking the finest view. Signature: The Out of Africa view and near-private Mara Triangle game viewing.

2. Mahali Mzuri — Olare Motorogi Conservancy

Best for: Exclusive conservancy luxury — Richard Branson's striking ridge-top camp in the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy, with superb game and almost no other vehicles.

Mahali Mzuri — the name means "beautiful place" in Swahili — is Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Limited Edition camp, and it is one of the most distinctive luxury camps in the whole Mara ecosystem. Its twelve tented suites are strung along a ridge in the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy, their angular, sail-like roofs raised on platforms to look out over a valley where elephant, lion and plains game move through almost constantly. Because Olare Motorogi strictly limits vehicle numbers, the game viewing here is exclusive in a way the national reserve cannot match — off-road driving, night drives and quiet sightings with no crowds.

The suites are generous and contemporary, each with a private deck, a day-bed and that sweeping valley view; there is an infinity pool, a Nasaro spa and a relaxed main tent where the hosting is warm and the food excellent. The Olare Motorogi Conservancy borders the national reserve, so the Mara River crossings are within a morning's drive in season, while the resident game on the camp's doorstep is outstanding all year. For travellers who want design-led luxury and the exclusivity of a private conservancy, Mahali Mzuri is a standout.

Location: Olare Motorogi Conservancy (northern Masai Mara). Style: Contemporary ridge-top tented suites. Best for: Couples, design lovers, exclusivity seekers, families (family tent). Signature: Sail-roofed suites above a game-filled valley in a private conservancy.

3. Mara Plains Camp — Olare Motorogi Conservancy

Best for: Small, exclusive conservancy luxury — Great Plains' raised tented suites on the Ntiakitiak River, with photographer-grade guiding and tiny guest numbers.

Mara Plains, run by Great Plains Conservation, is one of the most refined small camps in the entire Mara — just seven raised tented suites on a bend of the Ntiakitiak River in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy. Dermot and Beverly Joubert's conservation ethos runs through everything here: the camp is light on the land, the guiding is of the very highest, photographer-focused order, and the exclusive-use feel of so few tents in such a private, game-rich area is hard to match anywhere in Kenya.

The suites are a blend of campaign-era elegance and genuine comfort — copper fittings, leather, Persian rugs and canvas, raised on decks above the river with en-suite bathrooms and indoor-outdoor showers. There is a photographic kit for guests to borrow, a small pool, and the kind of hosting that remembers your name and how you take your coffee. Olare Motorogi's off-road driving and night drives, with no vehicle crowds, deliver exceptional big-cat sightings, and the national-reserve crossings are a drive away in season. For couples, photographers and anyone who prizes intimacy and conservation credentials, Mara Plains is exceptional. See our full Mara Plains Camp review for the detail.

Location: Olare Motorogi Conservancy, on the Ntiakitiak River (northern Masai Mara). Style: Seven raised luxury tented suites. Best for: Couples, photographers, conservation-minded travellers. Signature: Tiny guest numbers and photographer-grade guiding in a private conservancy.

4. Cottar's 1920s Camp — Olderkesi Conservancy

Best for: The most romantic luxury camp in the Mara — vintage 1920s explorer canvas in the private Olderkesi Conservancy, run by the Cottar family since 1919.

Cottar's 1920s Camp is the Mara's great romantic — a step back into the golden age of safari, run by the Cottar family, who have been guiding in East Africa since 1919. Set in its own private Olderkesi Conservancy in the far south-eastern corner of the ecosystem, bordering both the national reserve and the Serengeti, the camp recreates the grand explorer era: Persian rugs, campaign furniture, writing desks, roll-top baths, gramophones and vintage safari trunks, all under spacious canvas — with none of the discomfort of the 1920s and every modern luxury discreetly in place.

The private conservancy setting is one of the quietest and most exclusive in the whole Mara, with excellent resident game — lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant and plains game — and the freedom of walking safaris, night drives and off-road viewing that the national reserve does not allow. There is a pool overlooking the savannah, a spa tent, a dedicated family tent and the Cottar family's own peerless depth of knowledge of this land. For honeymooners, couples and anyone who wants the romance of classic safari at its most authentic, Cottar's is the one.

Location: Private Olderkesi Conservancy (south-eastern Masai Mara, bordering the Serengeti). Style: 1920s explorer-style luxury tented camp. Best for: Honeymooners, couples, families, lovers of classic safari romance. Signature: Golden-age explorer canvas in a private conservancy, by a family guiding since 1919.

5. Governors' Camp — Masai Mara National Reserve

Best for: The classic Mara River setting inside the reserve — a legendary camp in the heart of the action, superbly placed for the crossings.

Governors' Camp is the most famous safari camp in the Masai Mara, and for good reason: it occupies a prime stretch of the Mara River within the national reserve itself, in the game-rich Musiara area, shaded by riverine forest and surrounded by the open plains where the migration gathers. Few camps put you so completely in the heart of the Mara — the river crossings, the resident lion prides of the Marsh (of Big Cat Diary fame) and the daily theatre of the reserve are all on the doorstep.

The camp's tents are spacious and comfortable in the classic safari style, set in a line along the river where hippo grunt through the night and elephant pass on the far bank. It is less designer-led than the conservancy camps higher in this list, but what it offers is unmatched location and a genuine, time-honoured Mara atmosphere that generations of travellers return for. The wider Governors' family of camps includes the more intimate Little Governors' and the premium Il Moran, so there is a tier for every traveller. For a first safari in the reserve, placed right among the wildlife, Governors' is a classic for a reason.

Location: Masai Mara National Reserve, on the Mara River (Musiara area). Style: Classic riverside tented camp. Best for: First-timers, families, those wanting the reserve and the crossings on the doorstep. Signature: A prime Mara River position in the heart of the national reserve.

6. Sanctuary Olonana — Mara River

Best for: Contemporary riverside luxury inside the reserve zone — all-glass suites on a private bend of the Mara River, superbly placed for the crossings.

Sanctuary Olonana sits on a private, forested bend of the Mara River, with a position that few camps can rival for the July-to-October crossings — the river runs right below the suites, and the reserve's game-rich plains are minutes away. It is one of the most polished riverside camps in the Mara, rebuilt in recent years into a camp of fourteen all-glass suites that bring the river and the forest straight into the room.

The suites are among the most contemporary in the Mara: floor-to-ceiling glass, private decks over the water, outdoor showers and clean, light interiors, each with the sound of the river and the resident hippo below. There is a pool, a spa, a fitness area and a relaxed main deck where meals are served overlooking the water. The guiding is excellent, and the camp's Maasai-partnership ethos and conservation work add real substance. For travellers who want modern design, a superb river position and easy access to the crossings, Sanctuary Olonana is a strong choice.

Location: Private bend of the Mara River (western Masai Mara, reserve zone). Style: Contemporary all-glass riverside suites. Best for: Couples, honeymooners, crossing-season visitors wanting modern design. Signature: All-glass suites on the water's edge of the Mara River.

7. Kicheche Mara Camp — Mara North Conservancy

Best for: Intimate eco-luxury — a genuine, game-rich tented camp in the Mara North Conservancy, with some of the best guiding and photography in the Mara.

Kicheche Mara Camp is the pick for travellers who want the real thing: an intimate, owner-run eco-luxury camp in the heart of the superb Mara North Conservancy, where the game is as good as anywhere in the ecosystem and the vehicle numbers are strictly controlled. Kicheche has built its reputation on outstanding guiding and a deep commitment to photography — the camp is a long-time favourite of serious wildlife photographers, and its guides know exactly how to position for the light and the moment.

The eight tents are classic, comfortable and genuine rather than opulent — proper beds, en-suite bathrooms, private verandas looking over a valley alive with game — and the atmosphere is warm, personal and unpretentious. Mara North is one of the richest conservancies in the whole Mara, with resident lion prides, cheetah, leopard and elephant, and the freedom of off-road driving, night drives and walks. It sits a short drive from the national reserve and its crossings. For travellers who value substance, superb game and genuine eco-credentials over gloss, Kicheche Mara Camp is a consistent recommendation.

Location: Mara North Conservancy (northern Masai Mara). Style: Intimate eco-luxury tented camp (eight tents). Best for: Photographers, couples, repeat safari-goers, value-conscious luxury. Signature: Outstanding guiding and game in a private conservancy, with a true eco ethos.

8. Bateleur Camp — Kichwa Tembo / Oloololo

Best for: 1920s-style elegance at the foot of the escarpment — &Beyond's classic camp beside the Mara Triangle, with grand service and great access.

Bateleur Camp, run by &Beyond, sits at the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment beside the Kichwa Tembo plains, in a private concession on the western edge of the reserve — one of the loveliest and most game-rich corners of the whole Mara. It channels the 1920s golden age of safari in grand style: a colonial-era elegance of campaign furniture, butler service, polished wood and billowing canvas, set in a shady riverine forest with the great wall of the escarpment rising behind.

The tents are large and classically luxurious, with hardwood floors, four-poster beds, en-suite bathrooms and private verandas, and the service — a butler for each tent — is among the most attentive in the Mara. The location is superb: the Kichwa Tembo plains and the Mara Triangle are right there, with excellent year-round game and a straightforward run to the river crossings in season. For travellers who want colonial-era grandeur, polished service and a classic western-Mara setting, Bateleur is a refined choice.

Location: Kichwa Tembo concession, foot of the Oloololo Escarpment (western Masai Mara). Style: 1920s-style luxury tented camp with butler service. Best for: Couples, honeymooners, those wanting classic grandeur and polished service. Signature: Golden-age elegance beneath the escarpment beside the Mara Triangle.

9. Kicheche Bush Camp — Olare Motorogi Conservancy

Best for: Authentic, intimate conservancy canvas — a small, genuine bush camp in the game-rich Olare Motorogi Conservancy, with Kicheche's superb guiding at a gentler price.

Kicheche Bush Camp is the sister camp to Kicheche Mara, set deep in the outstanding Olare Motorogi Conservancy — the same private, strictly-managed conservancy as Mahali Mzuri and Mara Plains, but at a more accessible price and with the same intimate, genuine bush-camp feel that makes the Kicheche name. This is the classic tented safari done honestly: six tents in a quiet valley, superb resident game right on the doorstep, and guiding that ranks among the best in the Mara.

The tents are comfortable and unpretentious — proper beds, en-suite bush bathrooms, private verandas — and the camp runs on warmth and genuine bush knowledge rather than gloss. Olare Motorogi's exclusivity means off-road driving, night drives and walking safaris with no crowds, and the conservancy's lion, cheetah and leopard are as reliable as anywhere in Kenya. The national reserve and its crossings are a drive away in season. For travellers who want the real conservancy experience and Kicheche's guiding without the top-tier price, Kicheche Bush Camp is an outstanding-value choice.

Location: Olare Motorogi Conservancy (northern Masai Mara). Style: Intimate classic bush camp (six tents). Best for: Value-conscious luxury, photographers, couples, first-timers wanting the real thing. Signature: Genuine conservancy canvas with superb guiding at a gentler price.

10. Mara Serena Safari Lodge — Mara Triangle

Best for: Classic value with a grandstand view — a well-run hilltop lodge in the Mara Triangle, superbly placed above the Mara River crossings.

Mara Serena Safari Lodge is one of the best-known lodges in the Mara, and it earns its place for a reliable combination of comfort, value and a genuinely special setting. Built along a hilltop in the Mara Triangle — the quieter, best-managed western third of the national reserve — its Maasai-manyatta-inspired rooms look out over a vast sweep of plains, and the lodge's elevated position gives it one of the finest vantage points in the whole reserve for watching the Mara River crossings below in season.

The Mara Triangle location means superb year-round game viewing with fewer vehicles than the eastern reserve, and the lodge's hilltop pool is one of the loveliest places in the Mara to spend the midday heat between game drives. Mara Serena is larger and more classic than the exclusive camps higher in this list, which keeps it accessible and makes it a natural choice for first-time visitors and for drive-in itineraries. For travellers who want a dependable, comfortable base in the best part of the reserve — with a grandstand view of the crossings — Mara Serena is a consistent recommendation.

Location: Mara Triangle, Masai Mara National Reserve (hilltop). Style: Classic hilltop lodge with pool. Best for: First-timers, drive-in itineraries, value-conscious travellers. Signature: A hilltop grandstand above the Mara River crossings in the Mara Triangle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Angama Mara, perched on the Oloololo Escarpment high above the Mara Triangle, is widely regarded as the best luxury safari camp in the Masai Mara and one of the finest in Africa. Its glass-fronted tented suites, the view down over the plains where Out of Africa was filmed, and its outstanding guiding place it at the very top. That said, 'best' depends on what you want: Mahali Mzuri and Mara Plains Camp lead for the exclusive Olare Motorogi Conservancy, Cottar's 1920s Camp for private-conservancy romance in the south, Governors' Camp for the classic Mara River setting inside the reserve, and Kicheche for intimate eco-luxury in the Mara North Conservancy.

Both are excellent, and the best Mara safaris often combine the two. The Masai Mara National Reserve (including the Mara Triangle) holds the Mara River itself and the famous migration crossings, with the highest game density — but it is open to day visitors and can be busy at peak sightings. The private conservancies that ring the reserve to the north and east — Olare Motorogi, Mara North, Olderkesi and others — limit vehicle numbers, allow off-road driving, night drives and guided walks, and deliver a quieter, more exclusive experience with superb resident game. For the full explanation, see our Masai Mara private conservancies guide.

Luxury Masai Mara camps and lodges range from roughly $500–$900 per person per night for premium tented camps to $1,500–$2,900+ for the most exclusive — Angama Mara, Mahali Mzuri, Mara Plains and Cottar's 1920s. Rates are almost always fully inclusive: accommodation, all meals, twice-daily game drives, conservancy fees and most drinks. Classic reserve camps such as Governors' sit in the $700–$1,300 band, and well-run lodges such as Mara Serena are more accessible still. Peak season (July–October migration) commands the highest rates. For full package pricing and itineraries, see our Masai Mara safari packages guide.

For the famous July-to-October Mara River crossings, stay inside or close to the Masai Mara National Reserve and the Mara Triangle, where the river runs — Governors' Camp, Mara Serena, Angama Mara and Sanctuary Olonana are all superbly placed. The conservancy camps to the north (Mahali Mzuri, Mara Plains, Kicheche) are a short drive from the river and reward you with far quieter crossings and excellent resident game the rest of the day. Because the herds move daily, a camp with a great guiding team matters as much as location. For exact timing, see our when is the Great Migration in the Masai Mara guide.

The best luxury tented camps in the Masai Mara include Angama Mara (glass-fronted suites on the Oloololo Escarpment), Mahali Mzuri (Richard Branson's ridge-top camp in Olare Motorogi), Mara Plains Camp (Great Plains' raised suites on the Ntiakitiak River) and Cottar's 1920s Camp (vintage explorer canvas in Olderkesi). These combine the romance of canvas — the sounds of the plains at night, the sense of being properly in the wild — with en-suite bathrooms, proper beds, fine cuisine and exceptional guiding. For a country-wide view of Kenya's finest lodges, see our best luxury safari lodges in Kenya guide.

Governors' Camp is a long-standing family favourite in the reserve, with spacious tents along the Mara River, a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of space for children. In the conservancies, Mahali Mzuri offers a family tent and the exclusivity of Olare Motorogi, while Cottar's 1920s Camp has a dedicated family tent and a private-conservancy setting that allows walks and flexible game drives — ideal for keeping younger travellers engaged. Several camps offer private-vehicle and private-guide arrangements that transform a family safari. For family itineraries combining the Mara with the Kenyan coast, see our Masai Mara safari packages guide.

Most of the Mara's best camps are reached by a short scheduled or private light-aircraft flight — about 45 minutes from Nairobi's Wilson Airport to one of the Mara's many airstrips (Keekorok, Ol Kiombo, Musiara, Mara North, Olare Orok and others serve the different areas). Flying is the quickest and most comfortable way in and places you straight in your chosen area. It is also possible to drive from Nairobi (around five to six hours), which some travellers combine with a visit to the Great Rift Valley lakes en route. We arrange all transfers as part of your itinerary.

The Masai Mara is a year-round destination, and the best big-cat viewing in Africa is a constant. July–October is the classic season — the Great Migration and the Mara River crossings, superb game viewing, and the highest rates. December–February brings warm, drier weather, lush scenery after the short rains and excellent resident game with fewer crowds. The green season (March–May) is the quietest and most affordable, with dramatic skies and newborn wildlife, though some camps close in April. Because the Mara's resident lion, cheetah and leopard are present all year, there is no wrong time to visit. See our Great Migration timing guide for a month-by-month breakdown.
