3. Tofo & Inhambane — The Dive Coast
Halfway up the coast, the palm-fringed peninsula around Tofo and the old Portuguese town of Inhambane is Mozambique's laid-back soul — a place of dhow-dotted bays, seafood grills and some of the finest year-round diving on the continent. Staying in Maputo City
Few travellers come to Mozambique only for its capital, but Maputo is a rewarding place to spend a night or two at the start or end of a trip — a handsome, faded-grand city of jacaranda avenues, Portuguese cafés, a lively fish market and some of the best seafood in Africa. A Note on Safari — Gorongosa National Park
Mozambique is famous for its coast, but it has a wild heart too. In the centre of the country, Gorongosa National Park is one of Africa's great conservation comeback stories — a Rift Valley wilderness of floodplain, fever-tree forest and Mount Gorongosa, where decades of restoration have brought lion, elephant, buffalo and vast herds back to the plains. A few nights here, staying at the park's own camps, add a genuine safari chapter to a coastal holiday for the truly adventurous. When to Go
Mozambique is a warm, year-round destination, but the finest months are the dry season from May to November — sunny days, calm seas and excellent diving visibility, aligning with the humpback whale migration through Bazaruto and the south (roughly June to November). The green season from December to March is hotter and more humid with occasional storms, but brings lower rates and, in the far south, turtle nesting. Whale sharks are possible year-round off Tofo.
