Gorilla Trekking: What to Expect on the Trek

Gorilla trekking is unlike any other safari activity. You hike into misty mountain forest to spend one carefully protected hour with a family of wild mountain gorillas. This guide covers the trek itself, the encounter, the fitness required, the permit system and everything you need to prepare.

How the Trek Works

After an early briefing, you are assigned a gorilla family based on fitness and location. Trackers who monitor the gorillas radio their position, and you hike through forest and farmland to reach them. The trek can take anywhere from under an hour to several hours each way.

The Terrain and Fitness Needed

The forest is steep, muddy and often at altitude, so a reasonable level of fitness helps. Porters are available to carry bags and assist on tricky sections, and groups are matched to ability. Waterproof boots and a walking pole make the climb far more comfortable.

The One Hour With the Gorillas

Once you reach the family, you have exactly one hour with them. You watch silverbacks, mothers and playful youngsters feed, rest and interact just metres away. The rule of keeping a set distance protects the gorillas, though curious youngsters sometimes approach closer.

Permits and Regulations

Trekking requires a permit, and numbers are strictly limited to protect the gorillas. Permits should be secured well in advance through your operator. Groups are capped at eight visitors, and rules on distance, health and behaviour are firmly enforced.

What to Pack

Bring waterproof hiking boots, gaiters, gardening-style gloves for gripping vegetation, a rain jacket, long trousers and plenty of water. A porter is well worth hiring, both to ease the climb and to support the local economy.

Rwanda vs Uganda

Rwanda offers easier access and shorter transfers from Kigali, while Uganda's Bwindi is more affordable and pairs well with wider safari circuits. Both deliver an unforgettable encounter, so the choice comes down to budget, time and travel style.
