How Fit Do You Need to Be?
Gorilla trekking is achievable for most people in reasonable health, but it is not a stroll. Treks range from about one to several hours each way through dense, often steep and muddy rainforest at altitude. Here is how to prepare:
- Build some general fitness in the months before — walking and light hill training help.
- Tell us your fitness level so rangers can assign a gorilla family suited to you; some are much closer than others.
- Hire a porter — they carry your bag, lend a hand on tricky ground and directly support the local community.
- Pack right — sturdy boots, long sleeves, gardening-style gloves, rain gear and plenty of water.
What the Trek Is Actually Like
The morning begins with a briefing at the park headquarters, where you are assigned a gorilla family and meet your ranger. Then you set off into the forest, following trackers who have located the gorillas. The walk can be short or long, easy or demanding — that is part of the adventure. When you reach the family, the effort melts away. You spend one extraordinary hour with them, often just a few metres away, as they feed, groom and the youngsters tumble through the undergrowth.
