Zambia is where the walking safari was invented. In the 1950s the conservationist Norman Carr led the first guided walks through the Luangwa Valley, and in doing so defined a style of safari — on foot, close to the land, reading the bush rather than driving across it — that Zambia still leads the continent in today. It is a country that rewards the traveller who wants Africa at its wildest and least crowded: South Luangwa is widely rated the finest leopard destination anywhere, the Lower Zambezi is the home of the canoe safari, Kafue's Busanga Plains hold some of the most dramatic lion prides in Africa, and Victoria Falls thunders on the southern border.

We have assembled, compared and ranked the ten best Zambia safari packages available for 2026 and 2027 — private, luxury, all-inclusive, walking, canoe, fly-in, South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Kafue, Victoria Falls and honeymoon packages. Each is a real, bookable itinerary with honest prices. For the full country overview, see our Zambia safari tours guide; for the finest camps in detail, our best luxury safari lodges Zambia and best Zambia safari lodges guides cover the top options; for cost, our Zambia safari cost guide is the most comprehensive breakdown available. For timing, our when to visit Zambia guide has the full seasonal picture.

How We Ranked These Packages

Each package was assessed across five criteria: wildlife and activity access (quality of game drives, guided walking safaris, canoe trips and night drives, and the exclusivity of the area), accommodation standard (camp character, suite quality, location and depth of guiding), inclusions (how genuinely all-inclusive the rate is — activities, meals, drinks, park fees, internal flights, transfers), experience match (whether the package suits first-timers, walkers, photographers, honeymooners, families or those seeking the ultimate Zambia luxury), and value (what you receive at the price point). Rankings reflect the best overall score per traveller type, not simply the most expensive option.

1. South Luangwa Walking Safari — 6 Days

Best for: the birthplace of the walking safari and Africa's leopard capital — guided walks, night drives and the finest big-cat viewing in southern Africa.

South Luangwa National Park is the heart of a Zambia safari. The Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons support one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa — leopard above all, but also lion, elephant, buffalo, Thornicroft's giraffe, the endemic Crawshay's zebra, and more than 400 bird species. It is the park where the walking safari was born, and it remains the benchmark for safaris on foot anywhere on the continent. Expert armed guides lead small groups through the bush at dawn, reading tracks and bringing you into the landscape in a way no vehicle can match.

Six days allows a genuine immersion: game drives at first light, guided walks through the valley, and the night drives for which Zambia was a pioneer, regularly producing sightings of leopard, civet, genet and the smaller nocturnal hunters. The park's camps range from intimate bush camps reachable only on foot to the refined riverside suites of Time + Tide Chinzombo. A South Luangwa walking package is the clearest route in Africa to a leopard sighting, and the finest introduction to the country. For the park-specific options in full, see our South Luangwa safari packages guide. Full itinerary on our South Luangwa Explorer and Ultimate Walking Safari pages.

Price from US$3,800 per person sharing (6 days / 5 nights, South Luangwa lodge and bush camp, all meals, all game drives, guided walking safaris, night drives, park and conservation fees, road and light-aircraft transfers). Guided private-vehicle options from US$5,500pp. Best season: June–October for the driest conditions and peak predator activity. Ideal for: First-time Zambia visitors, walkers, wildlife enthusiasts, photographers.

2. Zambia Highlights: Luangwa & Lower Zambezi — 8 Days

Best for: the most complete first-time Zambia package — leopard country and the canoe river in one circuit that covers everything essential about the country.

The Zambia Highlights package is the best-selling Zambia safari tour we operate, and the finest introduction to the country. In eight days it combines the two defining wildlife areas: South Luangwa, with its leopard-rich game drives and guided walks, and the Lower Zambezi, where the canoe safari and river game viewing bring a completely different pace and perspective. No other Zambia itinerary of this length covers two such distinct and iconic environments.

The routing typically runs Lusaka → South Luangwa (4 nights, game drives, walking safaris and night drives) → Lower Zambezi (3 nights, canoe safaris, game drives and river fishing), connected by light-aircraft charter that cuts the long road transfers entirely. At every stop the activity focus shifts: dawn walks and leopard-tracking in the Luangwa, then drifting past drinking elephant at river level on the Zambezi. The Zambia Highlights circuit is the definitive Zambia safari holiday for visitors who want to experience the full country in a single trip. For the river leg in depth, see our Lower Zambezi safari packages guide.

Price from US$5,800 per person sharing (8 days, South Luangwa 4 nights + Lower Zambezi 3 nights, all meals and local drinks, guided drives, walks and canoe trips, park fees, internal charter flights from Lusaka). Top-tier camp selection from US$9,500pp. Best season: June–October. Ideal for: First-time Zambia visitors, couples, small groups, anyone who wants the full country experience in one trip.

3. Lower Zambezi Canoe & Game — 5 Days

Best for: the home of the canoe safari — paddling past drinking elephant and pods of hippo at river level, with game drives and tiger fishing on the Zambezi.

The Lower Zambezi National Park runs along the river opposite Zimbabwe's Mana Pools, a broad floodplain of winterthorn woodland backed by the dramatic escarpment. It is the home of the canoe safari — drifting downstream in a guided canoe, you come within metres of elephant crossing the channels, pods of hippo, and the crocodile basking on the sandbanks, at an eye-level intimacy that no vehicle can replicate. The park is also outstanding for game drives, walking safaris and tiger fishing, and the elephant populations here are among the most relaxed and approachable in Africa.

A five-day Lower Zambezi package builds the full range of river activities into the itinerary: guided canoe sections, boat cruises at sunset, game drives through the winterthorn, and optional tiger fishing on the main channel. The camps — Chiawa, Old Mondoro, Anabezi — are owner-run and intimate, positioned directly on the riverbank with the escarpment behind. For canoe-led travellers and those who want the river at the centre of the trip, this is the package. For the park-specific options in full, see our Lower Zambezi safari packages guide. Full itinerary on our Zambezi Safari Experience page.

Price from US$4,200 per person sharing (5 days / 4 nights, Lower Zambezi riverside camp, all meals and local drinks, canoe safaris, boat cruises, game drives, park fees, charter flights from Lusaka). Top-tier camp from US$6,800pp. Best season: June–October for the best river conditions and wildlife concentration. Ideal for: Canoe and water-safari enthusiasts, anglers, couples, repeat Africa visitors.

4. Kafue & Busanga Plains Fly-In — 6 Days

Best for: the tree-climbing lion prides of Africa's great secret wilderness — a mist-wrapped floodplain that few travellers ever reach.

Kafue National Park is Zambia's largest and one of the biggest in Africa, yet it receives a fraction of the visitors of the famous East African reserves. The jewel of the park is the Busanga Plains in the far north — a seasonal floodplain that draws huge concentrations of puku, red lechwe and other antelope, and with them some of the most dramatic lion prides on the continent, famous for climbing the fig trees that dot the grassland. Cheetah hunt across the open plains, and the birdlife on the floodplain is exceptional.

A six-day Kafue fly-in package is the only practical way to experience Busanga: the plains are remote, the access road impassable for much of the year, and the small seasonal camps — Busanga Bush Camp, Shumba — run only from roughly July to October. The package combines game drives across the plains, guided walks, boat trips on the Kafue River, and, on the premium tier, a hot-air balloon flight over the floodplain at dawn. For travellers who want the wildest and least-visited corner of Zambia, this is the package. For the park-specific options in full, see our Kafue safari packages guide. Full itinerary on our Kafue & Busanga Plains Safari page.

Price from US$5,200 per person sharing (6 days / 5 nights, Kafue and Busanga Plains camps, all meals and local drinks, game drives, guided walks, boat trips, park fees, charter flights). Premium tier with balloon safari from US$8,500pp. Best season: July–October, when the Busanga camps are open and the plains are at their best. Ideal for: Repeat Africa visitors, big-cat enthusiasts, photographers, those seeking the wild and remote.

5. Victoria Falls & Safari Combo — 7 Days

Best for: the world's greatest waterfall paired with first-class wildlife — the most complete introduction to Zambia for families and first-timers.

Victoria Falls — Mosi-oa-Tunya, "the smoke that thunders" — is one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and the Zambian town of Livingstone offers the closest and most adventurous access to it. A combo package pairs two or three nights at the Falls, with activities from the Devil's Pool at the lip of the drop to sunset cruises on the Zambezi, white-water rafting and helicopter flights, with a safari leg in South Luangwa or the Lower Zambezi for the wildlife.

Seven days is the ideal length for the combo: enough time to experience the Falls properly — the spray, the rainbow, the adrenaline activities and the gentler river cruises — before flying to a safari camp for game drives, walking safaris and canoe trips. It is the most complete introduction to Zambia for families and first-time visitors, combining the one sight everyone recognises with the wild country that defines the rest of the trip. For the Falls-specific options in full, see our Victoria Falls safari packages guide.

Price from US$4,900 per person sharing (7 days, Livingstone / Victoria Falls 3 nights + safari camp 3 nights, all meals at the safari camp, Falls activities as selected, guided game drives and walks, park fees, charter flights). Top-tier selection from US$8,000pp. Best season: Falls at their fullest February–May; best combined wildlife and Falls viewing June–September. Ideal for: First-time visitors, families, couples, anyone who wants the Falls and a safari in one trip.

6. Luxury Zambia Fly-In — 10 Days

Best for: Zambia's finest camps connected entirely by charter flight — South Luangwa, the Lower Zambezi and Kafue at the highest standard, with no road transfers.

The Luxury Zambia Fly-In is the gold standard of Zambia safari packages — a camp-to-camp circuit by charter aircraft that places guests in the finest camps in the country and eliminates every long road transfer. A typical ten-day routing covers South Luangwa (leopard country, walking safaris and night drives from Time + Tide Chinzombo), the Lower Zambezi (canoe safaris and river game from Chiawa or Anabezi), and Kafue's Busanga Plains (tree-climbing lions and open floodplain from Busanga Bush Camp or Shumba).

The fly-in format means the day begins with a short walk to the camp airstrip and ends, three or four camps later, in a different corner of Zambia. The wildlife experience shifts radically from region to region: from the leopard-rich lagoons of the Luangwa to the elephant-crossed channels of the Zambezi to the lion prides of Busanga. Every camp is owner-run, intimate and among the best in Africa. For the complete Zambia safari vacation experience, nothing matches a fly-in circuit at this level. For the camps in detail, see our best luxury safari lodges Zambia guide.

Price from US$9,500 per person sharing (10 days, fly-in between three or four camps, all meals and local drinks, all guided activities, all internal charter flights, all park and conservation fees). Ultra-luxury selection from US$15,000pp. Best season: July–October. Ideal for: Repeat Africa visitors, serious wildlife travellers, anniversary and special-occasion trips, clients who want the definitive Zambia safari holiday.

7. Liuwa Plain Migration Safari — 6 Days

Best for: the second-largest wildebeest migration in Africa — a vast, remote plain in Zambia's far west with almost no other visitors.

Liuwa Plain National Park, in the remote far west of Zambia, is one of the great secret wildernesses of Africa. Each November the park hosts the second-largest wildebeest migration on the continent — tens of thousands of blue wildebeest moving across the open plain, drawing lion, cheetah, hyena and some of the largest concentrations of raptors and cranes anywhere in southern Africa. The plain is almost entirely undeveloped for tourism: a single luxury camp, King Lewanika, and a handful of community campsites serve the whole park, meaning you may spend a full day without seeing another vehicle.

A six-day Liuwa package is for the experienced traveller who wants genuine wilderness and solitude above all else. The access is by charter flight from Lusaka or Livingstone, the camp is small and remote, and the experience — game drives across the endless plain, guided walks, and the spectacle of the migration itself in season — is unlike anything else in Zambia. For travellers who have done the Luangwa and the Zambezi and want to go deeper, Liuwa is the next frontier. For the park-specific options in full, see our Liuwa Plain safari packages guide.

Price from US$6,800 per person sharing (6 days / 5 nights, King Lewanika or community camp, all meals and local drinks, game drives, guided walks, park fees, charter flights from Lusaka or Livingstone). Best season: November for the migration; May–July for the green plain and predators. Ideal for: Experienced Africa travellers, photographers, those who want the wildest and least-visited corner of the country.

8. Zambia Photographic Safari — 9 Days

Best for: Africa's finest leopard and river photography — the Luangwa's big cats, the Zambezi's backlit elephant and Busanga's tree-climbing lions in one sustained circuit.

Zambia is one of the most rewarding photographic destinations in Africa, and for specific subjects it is unmatched. South Luangwa's leopard density and the country's pioneering night drives produce big-cat images that few other parks can offer; the Lower Zambezi's low, open riverbanks allow eye-level shots of elephant and hippo from a canoe or boat; and Busanga's open floodplain, mist at dawn and tree-climbing lions give the kind of clean, uncluttered compositions that photographers travel for.

A dedicated nine-day photography package covers all three environments: South Luangwa (four nights, game drives and night drives for leopard and the smaller nocturnal subjects), the Lower Zambezi (two nights, low-angle river photography from boat and canoe), and Kafue's Busanga Plains (three nights, open-plain lion, cheetah and dawn mist). The guiding can be supplemented with a specialist photographic guide and purpose-fitted vehicles on the Luangwa and Busanga sections. For the wildlife subjects in detail, see our Big Five safari Zambia guide.

Price from US$7,200 per person sharing (9 days, South Luangwa 4 nights + Lower Zambezi 2 nights + Busanga 3 nights, all inclusive, specialist photographic guide option, internal charter flights). Best season: August–October for peak predator and river concentration. Ideal for: Wildlife photographers, naturalists, clients who want extended time in each location.

9. Zambia Honeymoon Safari

Best for: the most romantic river safari in Africa — private dinners on the sandbank, sleep-out decks above the Luangwa, and the intimacy of owner-run camps.

Zambia is one of Africa's most romantic safari destinations. The owner-run camps of the Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi are small and intimate — often just six or eight beds — and the experiences they build for couples are among the most memorable on the continent: private dinners set up on a Zambezi sandbank at sunset, sleep-out decks above the Luangwa under the full arc of the stars, and the quiet of a canoe drifting past drinking elephant with no one else on the river.

A Zambia honeymoon safari typically pairs South Luangwa (three or four nights, walking safaris, night drives and leopard) with the Lower Zambezi (three nights, canoe safaris and private river dinners) — the combination of leopard country and the canoe river that defines the best of Zambia, at the camps best suited to couples. The packages book up early for the most popular honeymoon windows, particularly at the smaller camps where only one or two couples are in residence at any time. For the full honeymoon offering, see our Zambia honeymoon safari guide.

Price from US$6,200 per couple (7–8 nights: South Luangwa 4 nights + Lower Zambezi 3 nights, all inclusive at camps, internal charter flights, transfers, honeymoon extras). Ultra-romantic top-tier combinations from US$13,000 per couple. Best season: June–October for clear skies and the best wildlife. Ideal for: Honeymooners, anniversary couples, milestone celebrations, those who want Africa's most intimate river safari holiday.

10. Grand Zambia Safari — 14 Days

Best for: the complete Zambia safari vacation — every major region, five camps, and the full picture of Africa's wildest and least-crowded safari country.

Fourteen days in Zambia covers everything — and leaves nothing out. A grand tour at this length follows the full country circuit: Victoria Falls and Livingstone (2 nights, the Falls and the Zambezi), South Luangwa (4 nights, leopard, walking safaris and night drives), the Lower Zambezi (3 nights, canoe safaris and river game), and Kafue's Busanga Plains (4 nights, tree-climbing lions and the open floodplain). The routing is fly-in throughout, with charter flights connecting each region and eliminating every long road transfer.

The grand Zambia package is the definitive trip for travellers who want the whole country, or for returning clients who have done the Luangwa and want to add the Zambezi, Kafue and the Falls. Every environment is different — the thunder of the Falls, the leopard lagoons of the Luangwa, the elephant channels of the Zambezi, the lion plains of Busanga — and the overarching sense is of a country that gives back in exact proportion to the time you give it. For the planning framework and regional breakdown, our ultimate Zambia travel guide is the best starting point.

Price from US$13,500 per person sharing (14 days, fly-in between five camps covering all major regions plus the Falls, all inclusive, all internal charter flights, all park and conservation fees). Ultra-luxury selection from US$18,000pp. Best season: July–October for the full country at its peak. Ideal for: Repeat Africa visitors, serious safari enthusiasts, clients who want the complete Zambia safari vacation in a single trip.

Which Zambia Safari Package Is Right for You?

The answer comes down to four variables: who is travelling, how long you have, what the primary experience priority is, and budget. Here is how to cut through the options:

 • First visit, 6 days, leopard and walking priority: South Luangwa Walking Safari — the birthplace of the walking safari and Africa's finest leopard viewing.
 • First visit, 8 days, want the complete picture: Zambia Highlights — South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi in one circuit. The most popular Zambia safari tour we run.
 • Water and canoe priority: Lower Zambezi Canoe & Game — paddle past drinking elephant at river level, with game drives and tiger fishing.
 • Big cats and the wild and remote: Kafue & Busanga Plains — tree-climbing lion prides on a mist-wrapped floodplain few travellers reach.
 • First-timers and families who want the Falls: Victoria Falls & Safari Combo — the world's greatest waterfall and a first-class safari in one trip.
 • Honeymoon or anniversary: Luangwa + Lower Zambezi honeymoon. Africa's most romantic river safari, at the camps best suited to couples.
 • Photography: South Luangwa + Lower Zambezi + Busanga circuit. The three greatest photographic environments in Zambia in one package.
 • All of the above: Grand Zambia Safari (14 days) — every major region, five camps, the full country. Nothing left out.

The definitive comparison of the best private, luxury, all-inclusive and walking Zambia safari packages for 2026 and 2027.

We have walked the Luangwa at dawn behind a pioneering guide, paddled past elephant on the Lower Zambezi and priced every tier across Zambia's finest camps. Here is exactly how the best Zambia safari packages stack up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Zambia safari packages range from around US$1,900–3,200 per person for green-season and mobile-camping itineraries to US$3,200–5,800 for guided private lodge packages at mid-tier camps, US$5,800–9,500 for the top camps — Time + Tide Chinzombo, Chiawa, Busanga Bush Camp — and US$9,500–16,000 for fully fly-in itineraries covering South Luangwa, the Lower Zambezi and Kafue in one trip. A classic 8-day Zambia highlights package with a private guide starts from around US$5,800 per person. Our Zambia safari cost guide breaks down every tier in full.

A genuine all-inclusive Zambia safari package covers accommodation, all meals and local drinks, guided activities (game drives, guided walking safaris, canoe trips and night drives where offered), park and conservation fees, and laundry. Fly-in packages also include the internal charter flights between South Luangwa, the Lower Zambezi, Kafue and Livingstone. What is typically excluded: international flights into Lusaka or Livingstone, travel insurance, gratuities, and premium imported beverages. See our best Zambia safari lodges guide for how the top camps structure their rates.

Six to ten days is the ideal range for a Zambia safari holiday — long enough to combine two of the three core wildlife areas (South Luangwa, the Lower Zambezi and Kafue) with Victoria Falls, without rushing. A six-day package focused on South Luangwa alone is the best short standalone trip and the finest leopard-and-walking experience in Africa. Ten to fourteen days allows you to add Kafue's Busanga Plains or remote Liuwa Plain. See our when to visit Zambia guide for the full seasonal picture.

For first-time visitors, the Zambia Highlights package (8 days, South Luangwa + Lower Zambezi) gives the most complete picture of the country — leopard-rich game drives and guided walks in the Luangwa, then canoe safaris and river game viewing on the Zambezi. It covers everything that defines a Zambia safari tour in a format that does not rush any single experience. For those who want wildlife plus the Falls, add Victoria Falls for a seven-day combo. Our Zambia safari tours guide covers first-timer choices in detail.

The best time for a Zambia safari is the dry season, June to October, when wildlife concentrates along the shrinking rivers and the walking and canoe safaris are at their best. September and October are the peak months for predator sightings in South Luangwa, though the heat builds considerably. The green season (November to April) brings dramatic skies, newborn antelope and superb birding, and many camps offer significant green-season savings — though some bush camps close during the heaviest rains. For the complete seasonal breakdown, see our when to visit Zambia guide.

Zambia is the birthplace of the walking safari — pioneered in the Luangwa Valley by Norman Carr in the 1950s — and it remains the benchmark for safaris on foot anywhere in Africa. It is also widely rated the finest leopard destination on the continent, was among the first countries to permit night drives, and offers the canoe safari on the Lower Zambezi, which few other destinations can match. Above all, Zambia is wild and uncrowded: its parks receive a fraction of the visitors of the famous East African reserves. Our Big Five safari Zambia guide covers the wildlife in detail.

In Zambia, 'private' typically means your own vehicle, guide and canoe, with no shared activities — the whole experience is run to your pace. 'Luxury' refers to the accommodation standard — air-conditioned suites, private plunge pools, gourmet dining and the refined attention of small owner-run camps. The best packages combine both: completely private guiding and some of the finest camps in Africa, such as Time + Tide Chinzombo in South Luangwa and Chiawa on the Lower Zambezi. See our best luxury safari lodges Zambia guide for the full comparison, and our best affordable safari lodges Zambia guide for the value tier.

For peak dry-season dates (July to October) at the top camps — Time + Tide Chinzombo, Chiawa, Busanga Bush Camp — book 9–12 months in advance. These camps are small (typically 6–12 beds) and fill quickly for the best dates, and the remote bush camps run only a short season. Mid-tier lodge packages and green-season itineraries can generally be booked 3–6 months out. The internal charter flights linking South Luangwa, the Lower Zambezi and Kafue should always be secured early, as seats are limited on the small aircraft.
