Tofo's quieter, dreamier neighbour. Just around the peninsula, Barra is where a long spit of white sand meets a maze of mangroves and coconut palms. Steady breezes make it one of the best kite- and wind-surfing spots in the country, while the sheltered estuary and reef flats are superb for snorkelling and horse-riding at low tide. It is more relaxed and more private than Tofo — a favourite for those who want the same warm water with fewer footprints.
5. Ponta do Ouro — Wild Southern Surf & Dolphins

On the far southern tip near the South African border, Ponta do Ouro ("Point of Gold") is a broad, dune-backed sweep of golden sand famous for consistent surf and its resident pods of wild dolphins, which you can swim with responsibly offshore. Reached by 4x4 through coastal forest, it keeps a laid-back, road-trip vibe — beach bars, dive schools and fresh prawns — and is the easiest Mozambican beach to combine with a KwaZulu-Natal safari.
6. Vilanculos — The Gateway to the Islands
The friendly, family-friendly base. The mainland town of Vilanculos is the launch pad for the Bazaruto Archipelago, and a lovely destination in its own right. Its long, crescent bay is shielded by the outer islands, leaving calm, shallow, warm water that is ideal for families, sailing and kite-surfing. 7. Santa Carolina (Paradise Island) — Secluded & Historic

The smallest of the Bazaruto islands, Santa Carolina — better known as Paradise Island — was a glamorous 1950s celebrity retreat, and the faded ruins of its old hotel still stand above dazzling white sand. Uninhabited today, it is reached by boat for the day, offering some of the most secluded, dreamlike beaches in the archipelago, superb snorkelling and a haunting sense of history you will find nowhere else on the coast.
8. Magaruque Island — The Perfect Day Trip
The easiest island escape. Close to Vilanculos and Benguerra, little Magaruque is the classic Bazaruto day-trip island — a short dhow or speedboat hop to a rim of white sand and shallow, glass-clear water made for snorkelling and swimming. With its own quiet dune and reef flats, it is the ideal desert-island picnic spot for families and couples staying on the mainland who want a taste of true island paradise for the day.
9. Inhaca Island — The Escape Near Maputo
Island air, an hour from the capital. Just across the bay from Maputo, Inhaca is a marine-reserve island of mangroves, coral reefs and quiet, forest-backed beaches — the easiest island getaway in the south. Its protected waters are excellent for snorkelling and its research-station reefs among the most southerly in the world. Reached by ferry or a short flight, it is a lovely, low-key day or overnight escape when starting or ending a trip in Maputo.
10. Macaneta & the Santa Maria Peninsula — Wild & Close to the City
Untamed dunes on Maputo's doorstep. Just north of the capital, Macaneta is a wild, dune-forest peninsula of long, empty golden beaches and rolling surf, reached by 4x4 and a short ferry. To the south, the Santa Maria Peninsula and the Machangulo coast offer the same untamed beauty — expansive, uncrowded sand, dune forest and superb fishing — within the new Maputo National Park. A Note on the North: The Quirimbas Archipelago
Far to the north, off Cabo Delgado province, the Quirimbas Archipelago — Ibo, Vamizi, Medjumbe and Quilalea — is, on its day, one of the most pristine island chains on Earth. In recent years, however, security and access in parts of the northern province have been affected by regional instability, and some lodges have closed or paused operations. We monitor the situation continuously and travel there only when it is safe and lodges are genuinely operating. When to Visit the Mozambique Coast
Mozambique is warm and swimmable year-round, but the finest window is the dry season, May to October — sunny days, low humidity, calm seas and the clearest water for diving and snorkelling. This is also peak whale-shark and manta season at Tofo, and humpback whales pass the coast from roughly July to October. The green, hotter, more humid months from November to March bring occasional storms and, rarely, cyclones, but also lush landscapes and lower prices. Beautifully, the dry season aligns perfectly with prime safari time in Kruger and Gorongosa — so a single trip can deliver world-class game viewing and glorious beach weather.
