Best Safari for Big Cats: Where to See Lion, Leopard & Cheetah (2026)

For many travellers the big cats are the safari. A leopard draped in a sausage tree, a coalition of lions at dawn, a cheetah scanning the plains from a termite mound — these are the images that draw us back again and again. But big-cat viewing varies enormously by destination. Here are the places where lion, leopard and cheetah are seen best, and what each does better than the rest.

1. Masai Mara, Kenya — the greatest lion country on earth

Nowhere concentrates big cats like the Mara. Lion prides are large and relaxed, cheetah hunt the open plains in daylight, and leopard patrol the riverine forest. The private conservancies add night drives and off-road access, so you can follow a hunt where the national reserve cannot. For sheer big-cat density, the Mara is unmatched.

2. Sabi Sands, South Africa — the leopard capital of the world

If leopard is your dream, go to the Sabi Sands. Generations of habituated, relaxed cats mean sightings here are the finest anywhere — a leopard walking past your vehicle at arm's length is routine. Lion and, increasingly, cheetah round out a peerless big-cat reserve.

3. Serengeti, Tanzania — cats at scale

The Serengeti's endless plains support huge lion populations, the famous tree-climbing lions of the central region, cheetah on the short-grass plains and leopard along the Seronera River. During the migration, the predator action is simply extraordinary.

4. South Luangwa, Zambia — leopards after dark

Luangwa is one of the great leopard destinations, and its night drives — a Zambian speciality — reveal these cats hunting as they rarely can be seen elsewhere. Lion are abundant too, often on foot with an armed guide nearby.

5. Okavango & Linyanti, Botswana — big cats in the water

Botswana offers something unique: lions that swim between islands, leopards in the delta's fringes, and cheetah on the drier margins — all with tiny guest numbers. Exclusive, wild and superb for photography.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kenya's Masai Mara offers the highest density of big cats in Africa, while South Africa's Sabi Sands is the finest leopard destination on earth. The Serengeti, South Luangwa and Botswana's Okavango are also outstanding.

The Sabi Sands in South Africa is widely considered the best leopard destination in the world, thanks to generations of relaxed, habituated leopards that allow unusually close, prolonged sightings. Zambia's South Luangwa is superb for leopards after dark.

The open plains of the Masai Mara and the Serengeti offer the best cheetah viewing, as these cats hunt by day in open country. Cheetah are harder to see in dense bush reserves.

The dry season (roughly June to October) is best, as thinner vegetation and animals gathering at water make cats easier to find. In the Mara and Serengeti, the migration months add spectacular predator action.

Yes — the Masai Mara, Serengeti and a good private reserve like the Sabi Sands all offer realistic chances of lion, leopard and cheetah on a single trip, especially over four or more nights.

Singita Lebombo Lodge Review 2026: Contemporary Design & Big Cats in Eastern Kruger

Singita Lebombo Lodge sits on the private 15,000-hectare Lebombo concession in the far eastern reaches of Kruger National Park, strung along the cliffs of the N'wanetsi River near the Mozambique border. Where classic safari camps lean on thatch and canvas, Lebombo did the opposite: glass-and-steel 'loft' suites suspended in the treetops, an architectural main lodge, a wine studio, gallery and wellness centre, and a sister lodge — Singita Sweni — tucked more intimately into the riverine bush downstream. The concession's open grasslands are among the best cheetah and lion country in Kruger, and Singita's conservation-led ethos and legendary service run through everything. This is our honest, in-depth 2026 review: what the suites and both lodges are really like, the big-cat game viewing, the rates, and exactly who Singita Lebombo suits — written by a private Cape Town safari house that builds tailor-made journeys through Kruger and the greater safari region.
