For the best big cat viewing, travel in the dry season, June to October, when short grass and open plains make lion, leopard and cheetah easy to see and to watch hunting. Kenya's Masai Mara, Tanzania's Serengeti and South Africa's Sabi Sands are the world's finest big cat destinations.
Why the dry season is best
After the rains, grass is grazed and burnt down, and prey concentrates on remaining green flushes and water. Cats hunt in the open where you can see them, and cubs born earlier in the year are active. Cheetah in particular need short grass to hunt, so they are far more visible in the dry months.
Best places for each cat
For lion, the Masai Mara and Serengeti hold Africa's highest densities. For leopard, nothing beats the Sabi Sands, where relaxed cats are viewed at close range daily. For cheetah, the open plains of the Serengeti, Mara and Kenya's northern conservancies are unmatched. Combining East and southern Africa gives you the best of all three.
Month by month
July to October is prime, coinciding with the Great Migration in the Mara and peak dry conditions in the south. January to March is superb in the southern Serengeti, where the calving season triggers the most intense predator action of the year. Shoulder months of May and November offer good cat viewing at better prices.
The calving-season predator spectacle
From late January to March, over a million wildebeest give birth in the southern Serengeti. The concentration of vulnerable newborns draws lion, cheetah and hyena into a daily drama played out on open plains — arguably the best big cat action anywhere on the continent, and a green-season secret.
How to maximise big cat sightings
Choose reserves with high cat density and, where possible, private concessions that allow off-road viewing and night drives. Allow at least four nights across one or two areas, go out at dawn and dusk when cats are active, and consider a specialist big cat or photographic safari with expert guides who track individual animals.
| Months | Season | Cat viewing | Highlight | Best region |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jul–Oct | Peak dry | Excellent | Migration hunts | Masai Mara, Serengeti |
| Jan–Mar | Green (calving) | Excellent | Predator drama | S. Serengeti |
| May & Nov | Shoulder | Very good | Value, quiet | Sabi Sands, Ruaha |
