Chameleon Hill is superbly placed for Bwindi's southern gorilla groups in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors, as well as for Mgahinga's Nyakagezi family — several of Uganda's habituated families are within reach, and these southern sectors see far fewer trekkers than Buhoma. Rushaga also offers the extraordinary gorilla habituation experience, a four-hour encounter with a semi-habituated family alongside researchers. Standard gorilla permits are $800 per person; the habituation experience is $1,500.

Because the forest here is steep and remote, the treks can be strenuous and rewarding in equal measure — and returning to a hand-painted cottage above a glassy lake is the perfect antidote. On non-trekking days, the lodge arranges dugout-canoe trips and island visits on Lake Mutanda, golden-monkey trekking in Mgahinga, and village walks in the surrounding Bufumbira hills.
