Bathrooms are a highlight — several feature a freestanding tub set beside a wall of glass, so you can soak with the greenery pressing in from outside. Days at Buhoma are bookended in the ridge-top lounge and bar, an airy timber pavilion where a fire is lit against the evening chill and long tables encourage the swapping of trekking stories. Gorilla Trekking and Beyond at Buhoma

Buhoma is the historic heart of gorilla tourism in Uganda, with habituated families including Mubare, Habinyanja and Rushegura ranging through the surrounding forest. After the morning briefing a short drive or walk delivers you to the trailhead, and from there rangers lead you into the "Impenetrable" — a tangle of vines, ferns and giant hardwoods that can demand anywhere from one to six hours of walking before you reach your family. The reward is a private, hour-long audience with wild mountain gorillas at close quarters.
