A Lodge Beneath the Virunga Volcanoes

Mount Gahinga Lodge sits at around 2,300 metres in the foothills of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda's slice of the trans-boundary Virunga massif shared with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. From the lodge lawns the three volcanoes — Muhabura the "guide", Gahinga the "pile of stones", and jagged Sabyinyo the "old man's teeth" — fill the horizon. It is one of the great mountain views in Africa, and it changes hour by hour as cloud pours over the saddles between the peaks.

This is the quietest and most intimate of Volcanoes Safaris' lodges, and arguably the most characterful. Everything is built from local volcanic stone and thatch, with dry-stone walls threading between the bandas in a way that echoes the terraced hillsides of the surrounding Bufumbira country. Because Mgahinga sees far fewer visitors than Bwindi, a stay here feels genuinely off the beaten track — a frontier lodge with five-star hospitality.

The Bandas — Stone, Thatch and Volcano Windows

Each banda is a solid stone cottage crowned with a thick thatched roof, warm and snug against the cool mountain air. Inside, a wood-burning stove or fireplace anchors the room, big picture windows frame the volcanoes, and hand-crafted furniture, Batwa weavings and soft linens keep the mood restful. Bathrooms are generous, with a deep tub and hot water drawn from the lodge's own spring — the "gahinga" of the name refers to the volcanic stones that shape everything here.

At the heart of the lodge, a beautiful vaulted main lounge is built around a copper-hooded stone fireplace, with a separate dining room under soaring thatch and the atmospheric Dian Fossey-inspired reading room hung with maps and memorabilia. Meals lean on garden-grown vegetables and Ugandan produce, and evenings end with a nightcap by the fire while the volcanoes turn to silhouettes outside.

Gorillas, Golden Monkeys and the Batwa Trail

Mgahinga is home to one habituated gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group — unusually cohesive and, in recent years, largely resident inside the Ugandan park, making sightings reliable. A Uganda gorilla permit ($800 per person) buys the standard one hour with the family after a briefing at the park gate, a short drive from the lodge. Mgahinga is also the best place in Uganda to trek the endangered golden monkeys, whose acrobatic troops flash orange through the bamboo on a shorter, gentler walk ($60 permit).

The lodge's deepest story, though, is human. Mount Gahinga was developed hand in hand with the Batwa, the forest hunter-gatherers displaced when the parks were created. The Batwa Trail leads you into the forest with Batwa guides who demonstrate the skills of their ancestral home, and the nearby Gahinga Batwa Village — funded through the lodge and its trust — has given the community secure land and housing for the first time. It is one of the most meaningful cultural encounters in East Africa.
