Because there are only eight bandas, Bwindi Lodge never feels crowded. Gorilla Trekking from Buhoma — Straight from Your Doorstep

Buhoma is the original and most accessible of Bwindi's four trekking sectors, home to habituated families including Mubare (the first group ever habituated in Uganda), Habinyanja and Rushegura. Treks depart after an 8 AM briefing at the park headquarters, a short stroll from the lodge, so there is no long pre-dawn transfer. Depending on where your assigned family has moved, the walk through the forest can take anywhere from one to six hours over steep, root-laced terrain — which is exactly why the "Impenetrable" name endures.

When you reach the gorillas you are granted one hour in their company: a silverback the size of a small car, mothers cradling infants, juveniles tumbling through the vines a few metres away. A Uganda gorilla permit costs $800 per person and is strictly limited, so the lodge secures yours months ahead. Back at Bwindi Lodge by afternoon, you can add a guided forest walk, a visit to the Batwa community, or simply let the canopy and its birdsong take over from your private balcony.
