Kibale Forest is the chimpanzee capital of the world. This ancient rainforest in western Uganda is home to 1,500 chimpanzees—the highest density in East Africa—and thirteen primate species in total, from the endangered Uganda red colobus to grey-cheeked mangabeys and L'Hoest's monkeys. The chimp-tracking success rate is 95%, the best in Africa. Every morning, habituated chimp families are located and tracked through the forest; when you find them, the hour spent watching them feed, groom, play and squabble is unforgettable. For the ultimate experience, the Chimpanzee Habituation programme lets you spend a full day with the chimps from dawn (when they wake and climb down from their nests) to dusk (when they build new nests for the night). Beyond chimps, Kibale offers forest walks, red colobus tracking, the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary (a community-run birding paradise), and the stunning explosion crater lakes that dot the landscape south of the forest. Private lodges perch on crater rims and inside the forest itself, offering dawn chimp calls and total immersion in one of Africa's finest primate sanctuaries.
Where the forest canopy hums with chimp calls and thirteen primate species thrive, Kibale is Africa's primate capital. From dawn chimp wake-ups to crater lake sunsets, Kibale offers Uganda's most intimate wildlife encounters.
At a glance, Kibale Forest National Park, Uganda spans 795 km², 13 primate species, protected since Park 1993 — and the best time to be here is typically Year-round (dry Dec–Feb, Jun–Sep).
