Murchison Falls is Uganda's largest and oldest national park, a vast wilderness where the Victoria Nile slices through the Albertine Rift on its way to Lake Albert. The falls themselves are one of Africa's natural wonders: the entire Nile forced through a 7-metre gap, then dropping 43 metres into a boiling cauldron below. Boat cruises to the base of the falls reveal hippos, Nile crocodiles up to 6 metres long, and elephants drinking on the northern bank. Game drives across the Buligi plains offer Rothschild's giraffe (a subspecies found almost nowhere else), lion, leopard, buffalo, and vast herds of Uganda kob and Jackson's hartebeest. The park was devastated by poaching in the 1980s but has since recovered spectacularly. Private lodges perch on the Nile's edge, offering sundowner cruises, hot-air balloon safaris, and walks to the top of the falls.
Where the Nile explodes through the Rift, Murchison Falls is Uganda's largest and wildest park. From the thundering falls to the Buligi plains, Murchison offers Uganda's most iconic safari experience.
At a glance, Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda spans 3,840 km², 76 mammal species, protected since Park 1952 — and the best time to be here is typically December – February.
The Mighty Falls & the Victoria Nile
There is no gentle way to describe it — at Murchison, the entire Victoria Nile is forced through a cleft barely seven metres wide before crashing into the gorge below. A boat safari carries you upriver to the churning base of the falls, past basking crocodiles and pods of hippo, until the spray and thunder fill the air. Climb to the top afterwards and stand where the river explodes at your feet — one of the most primal and exhilarating experiences in Africa.
