Kidepo Valley is the wild frontier. Tucked into Uganda's remote northeastern corner between South Sudan and Kenya, this is a park of untouched savannah, dramatic mountain backdrops, and wildlife found nowhere else in the country. The Narus Valley is the game-viewing heart: lion prides stalk buffalo herds, elephants gather at waterholes, and Burchell's zebra and Jackson's hartebeest graze the plains. Kidepo is the only place in Uganda where cheetah and ostrich roam—both species are absent from the rest of the country. The larger Kidepo River Valley stretches north towards South Sudan beneath the jagged Morungole Mountains, offering wild landscapes and greater kudu. Only around 5,000 visitors reach Kidepo each year (compared to 200,000 at Queen Elizabeth), so you'll have the wilderness almost to yourself. Apoka Safari Lodge—the park's only luxury option—sits in the heart of the Narus Valley with infinity pool views over the plains. Beyond the wildlife, the park offers cultural encounters with the Karamojong (nomadic cattle herders) and the IK people (a tiny mountain tribe on the escarpment). Kidepo demands effort to reach (10-hour drive or 1.5-hour charter flight from Kampala), but the reward is one of Africa's last true frontiers.
Where Uganda meets South Sudan and Kenya, Kidepo Valley is Africa's last true frontier — vast, wild, and almost untouched. From cheetah on the plains to ostrich beneath the mountains, Kidepo offers Uganda's rarest wildlife and most dramatic wilderness.
At a glance, Kidepo Valley National Park, Uganda spans 1,442 km², 77 mammal species, protected since Park 1962 — and the best time to be here is typically September – March.
