The turnaround came through a pioneering partnership between the Malawian government and the conservation organisation African Parks, which took over management of Majete in 2003 and later Liwonde and Nkhotakota. Fences were rebuilt, poaching was brought under control, and animals were reintroduced — lions, rhino, cheetah and more.
The most dramatic chapter came in 2016 and 2017, with one of the largest elephant translocations in history — some 500 elephants moved from crowded parks to restock Nkhotakota.
