Discover Nyerere National Park (Selous Game Reserve)
Nyerere National Park—formerly the northern section of Selous Game Reserve—is Africa's largest protected wildlife area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 30,893 square kilometres of untouched wilderness. The Rufiji River, Tanzania's largest, flows through the heart of the park, creating a labyrinth of channels, oxbow lakes, and seasonal floodplains that support one of the most diverse ecosystems in East Africa.
What distinguishes Nyerere from Tanzania's northern parks is its emphasis on water-based and walking safaris. Boat safaris along the Rufiji reveal hippo pods numbering in the hundreds, Nile crocodiles up to five metres in length, and elephants crossing from island to island. Fish eagles perch in towering borassus palms. Kingfishers dart across the water. The boat allows you to approach wildlife in ways a vehicle cannot, creating encounters of extraordinary intimacy.
Nyerere is one of Africa's most important wild dog strongholds, with an estimated population of 1,300—roughly 10% of the species' remaining wild population. Sightings are among the most reliable anywhere in Africa, particularly during the May-November dry season when packs concentrate around permanent water sources. The park also supports significant populations of lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo, along with healthy numbers of sable antelope, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, and Nyasa wildebeest—species rarely seen in northern Tanzania.
The southern circuit's greatest advantage is its near-total absence of crowds. While the Serengeti can see 100+ vehicles at a single lion pride during peak season, in Nyerere you might have an entire wild dog den site to yourself. This is wilderness safari at its purest—vast, remote, and profoundly authentic.
