Best Green Season Safari in Africa: Where to Go & Why (2026)

Ask most first-timers when to go on safari and they will say the dry season — and they are not wrong. But the so-called 'green' or 'emerald' season, roughly November to March across much of the continent, is the connoisseur's secret. The bush turns impossibly lush, predators hunt among thousands of newborn grazers, migrant birds arrive in their millions, the light is extraordinary for photography, and prices fall by a third or more. Here is where the green season is not just good, but genuinely the best time to travel.

1. Southern Serengeti, Tanzania — the calving season

From late January to March, the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu explode with life as some 8,000 wildebeest are born every day. Predators follow, and the action is relentless. This is arguably the single greatest green-season spectacle in Africa — and far quieter than the July river crossings.

2. Greater Kruger & Sabi Sands, South Africa

The South African summer (November to March) brings impala lambs, thunderstorms that clear to golden light, and superb birding as migrants pour in. Leopard viewing in the Sabi Sands remains excellent year-round, and green-season rates make a luxury lodge dramatically more attainable.

3. South Luangwa, Zambia — the emerald season

When the Luangwa River floods, a handful of camps stay open for the 'emerald season', offering boat safaris, spectacular skies and some of the best birding on the continent. It is wild, intimate and gloriously uncrowded.

4. Madikwe & the Eastern Cape — malaria-free green season

For families, the malaria-free reserves are ideal in summer: lush scenery, baby animals and warm days, all without anti-malarials. A perfect green-season introduction to the Big Five.

Frequently Asked Questions

The green or 'emerald' season is Africa's rainy period, roughly November to March in Southern Africa and January to March in the southern Serengeti. Rains are usually short afternoon storms, the bush turns lush, animals give birth and prices drop.

Yes — it is superb for newborn wildlife, predator action, birding and photography, with far fewer crowds and lower prices. The trade-off is thicker vegetation and occasional rain, so game can be a little harder to spot than in the dry season.

The southern Serengeti during the January–March calving season is the standout. The Greater Kruger, Sabi Sands, South Luangwa and South Africa's malaria-free reserves are also excellent in the green months.

Mosquito activity is higher in the wet season, so anti-malarials are recommended in malaria areas. South Africa's malaria-free reserves — the Eastern Cape, Madikwe and the Waterberg — remove that concern entirely.

Usually yes — lodge rates in the green season are often 20–40% lower than peak dry-season prices, making luxury camps far more attainable for the same budget.
