For the best birding, travel in the green season, roughly November to April, when Palearctic and intra-African migrants arrive, resident birds are in breeding plumage and nesting, and wetlands teem with life. It is the opposite of the classic big-game window — and a paradise for birdwatchers.
Why the green season is best for birds
The rains trigger an explosion of insects, seeds and fruit, drawing millions of migrant birds south and bringing residents into breeding condition. Males display in vivid plumage, weavers build colonies, and raptors and waders concentrate on flooded plains. Bird lists in a single week can exceed 300 species in the richest areas.
Best places for birding
Kenya's Rift Valley lakes — Nakuru, Naivasha and Baringo — are legendary for flamingos and waterbirds. Botswana's Okavango Delta is a wetland wonderland with over 400 species. Zambia's South Luangwa is superb in the emerald season, and Amboseli and Lake Manyara offer easy, rewarding birding alongside big game.
Month by month
November to December sees the first migrant arrivals and the start of breeding. January to March is the peak, with full breeding plumage, nesting colonies and the highest diversity. April remains excellent as the rains ease. From May to October you still enjoy resident species, but miss the migrants and the breeding spectacle.
Birding and big game together
The beauty of an African birding safari is that you rarely have to choose. Green-season trips combine 300-plus bird species with newborn animals, dramatic light and superb photography. Resident specials, big game and birds share the same game drives, so even non-birding companions stay thoroughly entertained.
How to plan a birding safari
Travel between November and April, choose wetland-rich areas such as the Rift Valley lakes, the Okavango or Luangwa, and use a specialist birding guide who knows the calls and territories. Allow at least a week to build a strong list, and carry binoculars, a field guide and a camera with reach.
