Best Time for a Green Season Safari in Africa (2026)

The green (or emerald) season is the rainy season — broadly November to April in southern and East Africa, though exact months vary by country. It brings lush landscapes, newborn animals, the year's best birding, dramatic skies and the lowest prices. Game viewing is a little harder in thick bush, but the rewards — and the value — are considerable.

Why the green season is special

Rain transforms the bush. Impala, wildebeest and zebra drop their young, drawing predators into the open; resident birds breed in brilliant plumage and migrants arrive in their millions; and the light — storm clouds, rainbows, golden breaks — is a photographer's dream. Camps are quiet and intimate, and rates can be half the peak-season price.

Where the green season shines

The southern Serengeti hosts the calving in this window; the Kalahari and Makgadikgadi Pans in Botswana burst into a zebra migration; Zambia's emerald season offers specialist boat and photographic safaris; South Africa's Kruger and Eastern Cape are lush and lively; and Namibia's desert can bloom. Each country's green season has a different character.

What to expect — the honest trade-offs

Afternoon thunderstorms are common but usually brief. Grass is longer, so some animals are harder to spot, and a few remote camps close due to access. In exchange you get fewer vehicles, sharper value, fat healthy wildlife, and scenery at its most beautiful. For second-time safari-goers, photographers and birders, it is often the better trip.

Best months by country

For the Serengeti calving, go January–March. For Botswana's Kalahari and pans, go December–March. For South Africa's Lowveld, go November–March. For Zambia's emerald season, go December–April. For Namibia's green desert and birding, go January–April. We match the country to the month for the best green-season experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Broadly November to April in southern and East Africa, though exact months vary by country. It is the rainy season, bringing lush landscapes, newborn animals, superb birding and the lowest prices.

Yes, especially for photographers, birders and second-time visitors. You get newborn animals, migrant birds, dramatic light, quiet camps and much lower rates — in exchange for longer grass and occasional afternoon rain.

It depends on the month: the southern Serengeti for the calving (Jan–Mar), Botswana's Kalahari and pans (Dec–Mar), South Africa's Lowveld (Nov–Mar) and Zambia's emerald season (Dec–Apr).

Slightly. Longer grass and dispersed water make some animals harder to spot, but wildlife is healthy and abundant, predator action around newborns is excellent, and fewer vehicles improve the experience.

Considerably. Green-season and shoulder rates can be up to half the peak-season price, making it the best-value time to enjoy a high-quality safari.
