Chimpanzee tracking is one of East Africa's great primate experiences and a natural companion to gorilla trekking. In Uganda's Kibale Forest, the primate capital of the region, you follow habituated troops through dense forest as they feed, groom, play and call. This guide explains what to expect and how to plan it.
Where Chimp Tracking Happens
Uganda's Kibale Forest holds the highest density of primates in East Africa and is the premier place to track chimps. Nearby Queen Elizabeth's Kyambura Gorge and other forests offer alternatives, but Kibale's habituated communities give the most reliable sightings.
What the Trek Is Like
Guides and trackers lead you into the forest following calls and movement. Chimps are fast and arboreal, so tracking is more energetic than a gorilla trek — you may move quickly to keep up as the troop travels. The reward is watching them feed and interact overhead and on the ground.
Standard Tracking vs Habituation
A standard permit gives you around one hour with the chimps once found. The chimpanzee habituation experience is a longer, more immersive day-long option where you accompany researchers and spend far more time with a troop being habituated to human presence.
Chimp Tracking Essentials
| Detail | What to Know |
|---|---|
| Prime location | Kibale Forest, Uganda |
| Standard time | About one hour |
| Habituation | Full-day immersive option |
| Terrain | Humid forest, mostly flat |
| Permit | Required, cheaper than gorilla |
| Pairs with | Queen Elizabeth & Bwindi |
Fitness and Terrain
The forest terrain is generally flatter than gorilla country but can be humid and muddy. A moderate fitness level and sturdy shoes are enough, and the pace depends on how far the chimps have moved that morning.
Permits and Best Time
Permits are required and more affordable than gorilla permits, but should still be booked ahead. The drier months offer easier trails and better conditions, though chimps can be tracked year-round in Kibale.
Combining With a Wider Safari
Chimp tracking pairs beautifully with a broader Uganda trip — savannah game drives in Queen Elizabeth, boat trips on the Kazinga Channel and gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Together they make Uganda one of Africa's most varied safari destinations.
