The most common mistake first-time safari planners make is trying to see everything. The second is moving too fast. A brilliant custom itinerary is really an act of careful editing — deciding what to leave out so that what remains has room to breathe. This is how our specialists do it, step by step.
Step 1 — Start with the feeling, not the map
Before we mention a single park, we ask what you want the trip to feel like. Big-cat drama and open plains? The hush of a mokoro gliding through the Delta? Dunes, desert silence and stars? The feeling decides the geography — not the other way around.
Step 2 — Choose two or three anchors, not ten
A week is perfect for two well-chosen regions; ten days to two weeks lets you add a third or a beach finish. We pair contrasting landscapes so each leg feels fresh — say, the Serengeti's plains, then the intimacy of a private conservancy, then the Indian Ocean.
Step 3 — Get the pace right
We build in three nights per camp wherever we can. It is the single biggest upgrade to any safari: you settle in, your guide learns what you love, and you stop packing every morning. Fewer camps, longer stays, more life in each day.
Step 4 — Fly to save days, drive to feel the land
Light-aircraft transfers turn a lost travel day into another game drive; road journeys let you watch the country change and meet its people. We mix the two deliberately, using flights where the distances are punishing and the road where the journey is part of the story.
Step 5 — Match the lodges to the budget, protect the experience
There is a superb camp at almost every price point. We flex the accommodation up or down to hit your number while guarding the things that make a safari — the guiding, the wildlife density, the privacy — never the first things to be cut.
