Madagascar is really two holidays in one country. There is the interior most people picture — the lemurs, the spiny forest, the rainforests of Andasibe, the baobabs standing over the red roads — and then there is the other Madagascar, the one along the coast: a string of warm beach islands off the northwest, the whale season on the east coast, and some of the most private island resorts in the Indian Ocean. For a South African the beaches are closer than you would think — Airlink flies direct from Johannesburg to Nosy Be in about three and a half hours, and warm turquoise water is waiting on the other side.
This guide is about that second Madagascar — the beach-and-island holiday. We have put together, compared and ranked the ten best Madagascar beach holiday packages for 2026 and 2027 — honeymoon, luxury, family, all-inclusive, couples, value, island-hop, whale-watching, private-island and two-island holidays — built around Nosy Be and its smaller sisters of Nosy Komba, Nosy Sakatia and Nosy Iranja, the whale coast of Île Sainte-Marie, and the private islands of the far north. Each is a real, bookable itinerary with honest per-person prices, the whale calendar accounted for and the transfers spelled out. For the lemurs, the rainforests and the baobabs, our ultimate Madagascar travel guide and Madagascar safari tours guide cover the interior in full; for weather, our best time to visit Madagascar guide has the month-by-month picture; and if you are weighing Madagascar against the other Indian Ocean islands, our Indian Ocean islands compared guide sets them side by side.
How We Ranked These Packages
Each package was judged on five things: beach and island quality (the sand, the swimming, the reefs and the day trips offshore), accommodation standard (the resort, the room or villa, and the depth of service), inclusions (how genuinely the board basis holds together, and whether the internal flights and transfers are built in), experience match (whether it suits honeymooners, families, couples, whale-watchers or those after total privacy), and value (what you receive for the price, transfers included). Rankings reflect the best overall fit per traveller type, not simply the most expensive resort.
1. Honeymoon Beach Villa Escape — 7 Days
Best for: The classic Madagascar honeymoon — a beach villa on Nosy Be or a private island, warm water and a sunset over the sea.
Madagascar makes a quiet, wild honeymoon rather than a polished one, and for couples who want somewhere with character behind the sand it is hard to beat. A beach villa on Nosy Be, or a room on one of the private islands offshore, gives you privacy, warm west-facing water and a sunset over the sea each evening. A day out to the Nosy Iranja sandbar, a snorkel off Nosy Sakatia and a sundowner at Mont Passot fill the days between beach mornings. The resorts that do this best — Time + Tide Miavana on its own island in the north, Constance Tsarabanjina off Nosy Be, and the plantation estate of Anjajavy on the mainland coast — pair a beautiful room with a sunset sail, a spa and a dinner set on the sand.
Seven nights is the right length — time to settle on the beach, take the island day trips and still have slow mornings to spare. For the lodges that suit couples best, see our Madagascar honeymoon lodges guide; and our Time + Tide Miavana review and Constance Tsarabanjina review cover the two finest island addresses property by property.
Price from US$2,600 per person sharing (7 days, 6 nights beach villa or suite, half-board, return transfers, honeymoon extras at most resorts; international flights extra, around US$750 return from Johannesburg). Private-island villas from US$5,000pp. Best season: April–November for the calmest, clearest seas. Ideal for: Honeymooners, anniversaries, couples who want privacy and warm water.
2. All-Inclusive Nosy Be Resort Holiday — 7 Days
Best for: One clear price that covers meals, drinks and most activities on Madagascar's main beach island.
All-inclusive in Madagascar means Nosy Be, which holds the widest choice of beach resorts in the country and the only true all-inclusive boards. For a family or a couple who want to settle in one place and not think about the bill, the larger resorts around Andilana and Ambondrona run full all-inclusive — all meals across several restaurants, a drinks list and non-motorised watersports. Nosy Be is the easy choice for this kind of holiday: a direct flight in, a short transfer to the beach, and warm calm water a few steps from the room.
Seven nights lets you use a resort of this kind properly — the restaurants, the pool, the watersports, a day trip out to Nosy Komba or Nosy Iranja and a sunset at Mont Passot — without rushing. We read each board basis closely before we quote, and we will tell you honestly when a half-board rate at a smaller beach hotel, with Nosy Be's good independent seafood restaurants, would give you a better week for the money.
Price from US$2,200 per person sharing (7 days, 6 nights all-inclusive room, return transfers; international flights extra). Best season: April–November is driest; the resorts run year-round. Ideal for: Families and couples who want a fixed, no-surprises price.
3. Family Island Beach Holiday — 7 Days
Best for: Families who want calm Nosy Be bays, a pool, lemurs on Nosy Komba and easy boat trips the children will remember.
Nosy Be is the best base for a family beach holiday in Madagascar, because it adds lemurs, turtles and sandbar picnics to the sand. The west-facing bays are warm and calm for swimming, the day trips are a genuine thrill for children — the tame brown lemurs of Nosy Komba, the turtles off Nosy Sakatia, the shallow marine park at Nosy Tanikely and the sandbar at Nosy Iranja — and the direct Airlink flight from Johannesburg means no long connections with tired little ones. Family-friendly resorts on Nosy Be offer pools, family rooms and child rates that bring the per-person cost down.
Seven nights gives a family room to breathe — snorkelling in the shallows, a lemur morning, a turtle or sandbank trip and pool time in between. One honest piece of advice: Madagascar is wilder and less polished than Mauritius, so for a first family trip we base you on Nosy Be at a resort we know well. For the wildlife the children will love, our Madagascar safari tours guide covers the lemurs and the parks of the interior if you want to add a few nights inland.
Price from US$1,850 per person sharing (7 days, 6 nights family room, half-board or all-inclusive, return transfers; international flights extra; child rates available). Best season: April–November; the school holidays book early. Ideal for: Families with children, multi-generational groups.
4. Adults-Only Couples Retreat — 5 Days
Best for: Couples who want a quiet, grown-up resort and a shorter, easy beach break.
Not every couples trip needs a full week. Nosy Be and its private islands hold a run of small, quiet, couples-leaning resorts — boutique beach hotels, all-villa island camps and the quieter wings of the larger properties — where the mood is calm and unhurried. With a direct flight to Nosy Be and a short transfer to the beach, a five-night break is genuinely doable without feeling rushed.
Five nights gives four full days of slow mornings, a warm bay to swim in, a day trip out to a reef or a sandbar and dinners on the sand — a couples holiday without the cost of a longer trip. Staying on Nosy Be keeps it simple: you are on the beach the same day you land, with the smaller islands and the Mont Passot sunset within easy reach for a day out.
Price from US$1,550 per person sharing (5 days, 4 nights beach room or suite, half-board, return transfers; international flights extra). Best season: April–November is driest. Ideal for: Couples, short breaks, first-time visitors.
5. Value Nosy Be Beach Holiday — 7 Days
Best for: A full week on the beach at a low price — by staying at an honest Nosy Be hotel and travelling in the quieter months.
A Nosy Be beach week is one of the better-value long-haul holidays out there. Stay at an honest guesthouse or a well-run three-star around Ambatoloaka or Madirokely, travel in the quieter weeks, and the cost drops while the beach and the warm water stay exactly as good. Nosy Be has a lively, affordable side — good Malagasy and French seafood restaurants, cheap boat trips out to the islands, and the ylang-ylang distilleries and Mont Passot within a short drive — so a value week here is far from a bare-bones one.
Seven nights at this level is the value sweet spot — a beach, a couple of island day trips, a sunset at Mont Passot and the island's good, affordable restaurants for dinner. For which months suit you and where the deals sit, our best time to visit Madagascar guide lays out the weather and the seasons, and our best affordable lodges in Madagascar guide covers the value end if you want to add the interior.
Price from US$1,450 per person sharing (7 days, 6 nights guesthouse or three-star room on Nosy Be, bed and breakfast, return transfers; international flights extra). Best season: The quieter shoulder weeks for the best rates. Ideal for: Value-minded couples and families, longer stays on a budget.
6. Nosy Be & Nosy Iranja Island-Hop — 7 Days
Best for: Travellers who want the smaller islands — the sandbar, the lemurs and the reefs, not just one beach.
The best of the northwest is not one island but several, and an island-hop holiday takes them in properly. Base on Nosy Be, then give real time to its smaller sisters: Nosy Komba for the tame brown lemurs and the village craft market, Nosy Sakatia for the turtles and the quiet, Nosy Tanikely for the marine-park snorkelling, and the twin-island sandbar of Nosy Iranja for a day on the sand. Some trips add a night or two out on a smaller island camp to slow the pace right down.
Seven nights carries the hop at a sensible rhythm — a few nights on Nosy Be, the day trips by boat, and a night or two on a quieter island if you want it. We arrange the boats, the guides and the marine-park fees, and time the trips around the tide and the sea so your days on the water work. For the private-island end of the archipelago, our Time + Tide Tsara Komba review covers one of the loveliest small-island camps off Nosy Be.
Price from US$1,750 per person sharing (7 days, 6 nights Nosy Be and island stays, half-board, boat trips and transfers; marine-park fees and international flights extra). Best season: April–November for the calmest water. Ideal for: Snorkellers, active couples and families, travellers who want more than one beach.
7. Île Sainte-Marie Whale-Watching Holiday — 7 Days
Best for: Travellers who want the humpback whales — a beach week on the east coast, timed for July to September.
From July to September, humpback whales gather off Île Sainte-Marie, the long thin island off Madagascar's east coast, to calve and mate — one of the finest and least crowded whale-watching seasons in the Indian Ocean. A beach week on Sainte-Marie in those months pairs easy, responsible whale-watching boat trips with a quiet, green island of coconut palms, old pirate graves, and the tiny jewel of Île aux Nattes off its southern tip. It is wilder and simpler than Nosy Be, which is part of its charm.
Seven nights gives time for two or three whale trips around the weather, a day over to Île aux Nattes, and slow beach mornings in between. We time the stay to the heart of the season, book the responsible operators and build in buffer days for the sea. One honest note: Sainte-Marie is an east-coast island with a cyclone risk from January to March, so it is strictly a dry-season trip — outside July to September, Nosy Be is the better beach bet. For the full seasonal picture, our best time to visit Madagascar guide lays out the months.
Price from US$1,950 per person sharing (7 days, 6 nights beach room, half-board, return transfers including the domestic flight from Antananarivo; whale trips and international flights extra). Best season: July–September for the whales. Ideal for: Whale-watchers, nature-minded couples and families, quieter-island travellers.
8. Ultra-Luxury Private Island Holiday — 7 Days
Best for: The finest address in Madagascar — a private island of your own in the far north.
At the top end, Madagascar holds one of the most admired addresses in the whole Indian Ocean. Time + Tide Miavana sits on its own private island, Nosy Ankao, off the remote northeast coast — a handful of design-led villas reached by helicopter, with their own reefs, diving, kite-surfing and a conservation record to match. Its near-equals are the plantation-style estate of Anjajavy on the northwest mainland coast, a Relais & Châteaux beach-and-baobab lodge reached by light aircraft, and Constance Tsarabanjina, a barefoot-luxury island off Nosy Be.
Seven nights does a resort of this calibre justice — the villa, the diving, the spa and the sheer seclusion take time to enjoy, and on a private island the isolation is the point. These lodges hold very few rooms and book out a long way ahead, especially in the dry season. For the full picture, our Time + Tide Miavana review and Anjajavy review go property by property, and our best luxury lodges in Madagascar guide covers the grand names across the island.
Price from US$7,500 per person sharing (7 days, 6 nights private-island villa, most meals, return transfers including the light-aircraft or helicopter flight; international flights extra). Miavana runs well beyond this. Best season: April–November. Ideal for: Milestone celebrations, luxury travellers, those wanting total privacy.
9. Safari & Beach Combo — 10 Days
Best for: The complete Madagascar — the lemurs and rainforests first, then the beach to unwind.
The finest way to see Madagascar on a first visit is to put the wildlife and the beach in one trip, and nowhere pairs the two more naturally. A few nights in the interior for the lemurs and the rainforest — Andasibe for the indri, perhaps Isalo's canyons or the Avenue of the Baobabs — then a domestic flight north to Nosy Be or over to Île Sainte-Marie for a week on the sand, makes a holiday with both the wildlife and the rest. The timing lines up, since the dry season from April to November suits both the parks and the beaches.
Ten days carries the two halves comfortably — three or four nights inland, five or six on the beach. We handle the domestic flights so the switch is a single easy travel day, and we match the beach half to the first half — a quiet island after a busy week of walking and wildlife. For the interior itineraries in full, our Madagascar safari tours guide and ultimate Madagascar travel guide set out the parks and the routings, and our luxury safari and beach combinations guide covers the wider bush-and-beach picture across Africa.
Price from US$4,800 per person sharing (10 days, interior lodges and a Madagascar beach resort, most meals inland, all domestic flights between the parks and the beach; international flights extra). Best season: April–November suits both halves. Ideal for: First-time Madagascar travellers who want wildlife and beach.
10. Grand Nosy Be & Sainte-Marie Two-Island Holiday — 10 Days
Best for: The two great beach islands at a slower pace — the lively northwest paired with the quiet whale coast.
For a longer, slower beach holiday, the best of coastal Madagascar is a two-island trip that pairs Nosy Be in the northwest with Île Sainte-Marie on the east coast. Nosy Be brings the choice of resorts, the day trips to the smaller islands and the easy swimming; Sainte-Marie brings the quiet, the pirate history, the jewel of Île aux Nattes and, from July to September, the humpback whales. Together they show the two very different moods of the Madagascar coast in one trip.
This is the holiday for travellers making the long journey who want to know the islands properly. Ten days lets you settle into both rather than rushing. We build the inter-island flights, routed through Antananarivo, into relaxed travel days, match the two stays to the mood you want on each, and — if your dates allow — time the Sainte-Marie half to the whale season. It is the fullest picture of beach Madagascar there is.
Price from US$3,400 per person sharing (10 days, Nosy Be and Île Sainte-Marie stays, half-board, all inter-island flights and transfers; international flights extra). Best season: July–September to catch the whales on the Sainte-Marie half. Ideal for: Longer holidays, repeat visitors, travellers who want two islands.
Honeymoon, Luxury, Family, All-Inclusive or Couples — Which Package Is Right for You?
The words travellers use most for a Madagascar beach holiday overlap, but they point to different trips. Here is how we read them when we plan:
- Honeymoon — a beach villa on Nosy Be or a private island, the Nosy Iranja sandbar and a sunset over the sea.
- Luxury — the private islands and grand estates — Time + Tide Miavana, Anjajavy, Constance Tsarabanjina — where the villa and the seclusion set the standard.
- Family — calm Nosy Be bays, a pool, the lemurs of Nosy Komba and the turtles off Nosy Sakatia, with child rates to keep the cost down.
- All-inclusive — one price covering meals, drinks and watersports, done best at the larger Nosy Be resorts.
- Couples — a quiet, grown-up resort and a slower pace, often a boutique beach hotel or a small island camp.
Most of our guests end up blending two of these — a luxury honeymoon, or a family week with a few nights inland for the lemurs. Tell us which words matter most to you and we will match the island, the resort and the transfers to them.

Rates depend on island, resort, room or villa category, board basis, season and travel dates; the airport transfer is usually included, while international flights, the visa and some excursions and domestic flights are extra. Final rates depend on resort, dates and group size. Ask us about honeymoon offers, free-nights deals and child rates. For the interior lodges, our best luxury lodges in Madagascar and best affordable lodges in Madagascar guides break those budgets down.
When to Go — and When to Book
Madagascar's beach season is the dry season, roughly April to November — warm, drier and calmer, with the clearest water for snorkelling and diving around Nosy Be. The middle of it, July to September, is the humpback whale season off Île Sainte-Marie and in the channel near Nosy Be, which is a real reason to time a trip then. The wet season runs December to March, hotter and greener, with a cyclone risk on the east coast in January and February that rules out Île Sainte-Marie in those months, though the northwest around Nosy Be stays more sheltered and can still make a good warm-weather beach break. For the full month-by-month picture, see our best time to visit Madagascar guide.
Peak weeks — the South African and European school holidays, the festive season and the heart of the whale season — sell out early, and the small private-island lodges such as Miavana, Anjajavy and Tsarabanjina book out six to twelve months ahead whatever the season, simply because they hold so few rooms. For those, book well in advance. For a beach week on Nosy Be at a larger resort, three to four months is usually enough lead time, and that is where the best value sits. If your dates are flexible, the shoulder weeks are when the resorts run their best deals.
Why Book Your Madagascar Holiday With Beyond Africa
We plan private Indian Ocean and African travel year round, and Madagascar — both the beaches and the interior — is an island we know well. We know which island suits a honeymoon and which suits a family, which Nosy Be resorts earn their keep and when a half-board rate with meals out is the better week, how the whale season runs off Sainte-Marie, where the turtles and the reefs are, and how the changeable domestic flight network really works so your connections hold. That means we can match the island, the resort and the room to your trip honestly, pair the beach with the lemurs when you want both, and handle the internal flights and the transfers so your days are spent on the sand rather than on the admin.
