Few beach holidays carry as much behind them as Zanzibar — and for a South African it is closer than most think: a direct flight of about five hours from Johannesburg, a straightforward visa on arrival, and warm turquoise water waiting on the other side. This is the Spice Island, the old Swahili trading archipelago off the Tanzanian coast, and it gives you far more than sand. White beaches on the north and east, the carved-door lanes of Stone Town, clove and cinnamon farms in the interior, the red colobus monkeys of Jozani, the giant tortoises of Prison Island, and the private Mnemba atoll offshore — all on an island that is warmer, cheaper and livelier than the granite Seychelles, with a strong culture of its own behind the beach.
We have put together, compared and ranked the ten best Zanzibar holiday packages for 2026 and 2027 — honeymoon, luxury, family, all-inclusive, couples, value, Stone-Town-and-beach, spice-and-culture, two-island and private-island beach holidays — from the swimming beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa to the kitesurfing lagoon of Paje and the quiet northeast coast facing Mnemba. Each is a real, bookable itinerary with honest per-person prices, the tides accounted for and the transfers spelled out. For weather and the marine calendar, our separate best time to visit Zanzibar guide has the month-by-month picture; and if you are weighing Zanzibar against the other great Indian Ocean islands, our Indian Ocean islands compared guide sets them side by side.
How We Ranked These Packages
Each package was judged on five things: beach and bay quality (the sand, the swimming, the tide and the snorkelling), accommodation standard (the resort, the room or villa, and the depth of service), inclusions (how genuinely the board basis holds together, and whether the airport transfers are built in), experience match (whether it suits honeymooners, families, culture travellers, couples or those after total privacy), and value (what you receive for the price, transfers included). Rankings reflect the best overall fit per traveller type, not simply the most expensive resort.
1. Honeymoon Beach Villa Escape — 7 Days
Best for: The classic Zanzibar honeymoon — a beachfront villa on the quiet coast, a sunset dhow, and resorts that handle romance without a fuss.
Zanzibar has been a honeymoon favourite for a generation, and it earns it with warmth and character rather than grandeur alone. A beachfront villa on the northeast coast near Matemwe or Kiwengwa, or on the quieter northern sand, gives you privacy, warm water and a dhow sailing past at sunset. The resorts that do this best — Zuri Zanzibar, The Residence, Baraza, Matemwe Lodge and the private Mnemba Island — pair a beautiful room with a sunset cruise, a spa and a dinner set on the sand, and most fold honeymoon extras into the stay.
Seven nights is the right length — time to settle on the beach, take a dhow out to a sandbank, snorkel the Mnemba reef and spend a half-day in Stone Town, with beach days to spare. For the beaches that suit couples best, see our best Zanzibar beaches for honeymooners guide; and for how Zanzibar compares with the other Indian Ocean honeymoon islands, our Mauritius vs Seychelles vs Zanzibar honeymoon guide weighs them up.
Price from US$1,950 per person sharing (7 days, 6 nights beachfront villa or suite, half-board, return airport transfers, honeymoon extras at most resorts; international flights extra, around US$650 return from Johannesburg). Grand resort and private-pool villas from US$3,500pp. Best season: June–October and December–February for the calmest, clearest seas. Ideal for: Honeymooners, anniversaries, couples who want privacy and warm water.
2. All-Inclusive Luxury Resort Holiday — 7 Days
Best for: One clear price that covers meals, drinks and most activities at a genuine island beach resort.
All-inclusive is widely and well done in Zanzibar, especially on the north and northeast coasts, and for a family or a couple who want to settle in one place and not think about the bill it is the easy choice. Riu Palace Zanzibar and Dream of Zanzibar run full all-inclusive boards on good northern beaches; Melia Zanzibar and several of the larger beach hotels offer generous all-inclusive options too. A typical board covers all meals across several restaurants, a drinks list, non-motorised watersports and, at the family resorts, the kids' club.
Seven nights lets you use a resort of this kind properly — the restaurants, the pool, the watersports, a dhow trip and the spa — without rushing. We read each board basis closely before we quote, and we will tell you honestly when a half-board rate at a smaller beach hotel, with Zanzibar's genuinely good independent seafood restaurants, would give you a better week for the money. Our Zanzibar all-inclusive holidays guide covers the resorts in detail.
Price from US$1,850 per person sharing (7 days, 6 nights all-inclusive room, return transfers; international flights extra). Best season: Year-round; June–October and December–February are driest. Ideal for: Families and couples who want a fixed, no-surprises price.
3. Family Beach Resort Holiday — 7 Days
Best for: Families who want a kids' club, family rooms, calm northern bays and real culture the children will remember.
Zanzibar is an easy and a rewarding long-haul beach holiday with children, because it adds spice markets, forest monkeys and dhow trips to the sand. The northern bays are warm and safe for swimming through the tide, the day trips to Jozani Forest, the spice farms and Prison Island are a genuine thrill for children, and the direct flight from Johannesburg means no long connections with tired little ones. Family favourites — Melia Zanzibar, Baraza, Breezes Beach Club and the larger all-inclusives — have children's pools, supervised clubs and family rooms, and child rates bring the per-person cost down.
Seven nights gives a family room to breathe — snorkelling in the shallows, a dhow or sandbank trip, a forest and spice-farm morning, and pool time in between. One honest piece of advice: base a family on the north coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) if swimming through the day matters, because the southeast tide goes out a long way. For the forest, the tortoises and the best family outings, our best things to do in Zanzibar guide points you to the right ones.
Price from US$1,650 per person sharing (7 days, 6 nights family room, half-board or all-inclusive, return transfers; international flights extra; child rates and free-child deals available). Best season: June–October and December–February; the school holidays book early. Ideal for: Families with children, multi-generational groups.
4. Adults-Only Couples Retreat — 5 Days
Best for: Couples who want a quiet, grown-up resort and a shorter, easy beach break.
Not every couples trip needs a full week. Zanzibar has a run of adults-only and couples-leaning resorts — the smaller boutique beach hotels, the all-villa estates and the quieter wings of the larger properties — where the mood is calm and there is no children's club in earshot. With a direct flight and a road transfer of an hour or less, a five-night break is genuinely doable without feeling rushed.
Five nights gives four full days of slow mornings, a warm bay to swim in, a sunset dhow and dinners on the sand — a couples holiday without the cost of a longer trip. Staying on the north or northeast coast keeps it simple: you are on the beach the same day you land, with Stone Town and the Mnemba reef within easy reach for a day out.
Price from US$1,450 per person sharing (5 days, 4 nights beach room or suite, half-board, return transfers; international flights extra). Best season: Year-round; June–October and December–February are driest. Ideal for: Couples, short breaks, first-time visitors.
5. Value Shoulder-Season Beach Holiday — 7 Days
Best for: A full week on the beach at a low price — by staying on the southeast coast and travelling in the quieter months.
A Zanzibar beach week is one of the better-value long-haul holidays out there. Stay on the southeast coast at an honest guesthouse or a well-run three-star around Paje, Jambiani or Bwejuu, travel in the quieter weeks, and the cost drops sharply while the beach and the warm water stay exactly as good. Paje is also the island's kitesurfing centre, so a value week here can come with a lesson or two thrown in. The one thing to know is the tide: the southeast coast empties out a long way twice a day, which is beautiful to walk but means you swim around the tide rather than at any hour.
Seven nights at this level is the value sweet spot — a beach, a dhow trip, a half-day in Stone Town and the island's good, affordable Swahili restaurants for dinner. For which months suit you and where the deals sit, our best time to visit Zanzibar guide lays out the weather and the seasons, and our Zanzibar holiday cost guide breaks the budget down.
Price from US$1,250 per person sharing (7 days, 6 nights guesthouse or three-star room on the southeast coast, bed and breakfast, return transfers; international flights extra). Best season: The quieter shoulder weeks for the best rates. Ideal for: Value-minded couples and families, longer stays on a budget, kitesurfers.
6. Stone Town & Beach Holiday — 7 Days
Best for: Travellers who want the real Zanzibar — the old Swahili town and the spices, paired with the beach.
Stone Town is what sets Zanzibar apart from a plain beach island, and the best way to take it in is to give it its own nights rather than a rushed half-day. Two nights in the old town — a coral-stone hotel such as Park Hyatt Zanzibar or Emerson Spice, a walk through the carved-door lanes, the Old Fort, the old slave-market site and the Forodhani night market by the sea — then five nights on the beach to unwind, makes a holiday with both halves of the island in it. A spice-farm morning on the way between the two ties it together.
Seven nights carries both at a sensible pace. We book the town hotel and the beach resort, handle the transfer between them, and time the Stone Town nights so you catch the evening markets and the sunset from the waterfront. For the old town street by street, our Stone Town guide is the companion read, and our best things to do in Zanzibar guide covers the spice farms and the day trips.
Price from US$1,550 per person sharing (7 days, 2 nights Stone Town, 4 nights beach, bed and breakfast or half-board, all transfers; international flights extra). Best season: June–October and December–February. Ideal for: First-time visitors, culture-minded travellers, couples and families who want more than the sand.
7. Spice Island Culture & Nature Holiday — 7 Days
Best for: Travellers who want more than the beach — the spice farms, the forest, the reef and the dolphins.
Zanzibar rewards a nature-and-culture holiday as much as a beach one, and a week here can take in a great deal. The spice farms of the interior, the red colobus monkeys and mangrove boardwalk of Jozani Forest, the giant tortoises of Prison Island, snorkelling the Mnemba reef for turtles and dolphins, and the dolphins off Kizimkazi in the south all sit within easy reach of a beach base. Add a dhow trip to a sandbank and a half-day in Stone Town, and you have a holiday with real variety to it.
Seven nights gives you time to mix the water, the land and the town without rushing — two or three day trips, a dhow outing, a forest and spice morning, and beach days in between. We base the week on the coast that suits the trips you most want and arrange the guides, the boats and the park fees. For the full menu of what to see and do, our best things to do in Zanzibar guide runs through it, and our Mnemba and private islands guide covers the reef.
Price from US$1,700 per person sharing (7 days, 6 nights beach room, half-board, return transfers; day trips, snorkelling and park fees extra; international flights extra). Best season: June–October for the clearest water and the dolphins. Ideal for: Active travellers, families with older children, snorkellers and culture travellers.
8. Ultra-Luxury Private Island Holiday — 7 Days
Best for: The island's finest address — the private Mnemba atoll and the grandest beach villas.
At the top end, Zanzibar holds one of the most admired addresses in the Indian Ocean. &Beyond Mnemba Island — a tiny private atoll off the northeast coast with a handful of beach bandas, its own reef and a conservation record to match — sets the standard, with butler service, superb snorkelling and diving, and total seclusion. On the main island, the grandest beach estates are its near-equals in polish: Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas with its private-pool villas, The Residence with its plantation-style suites, and Matemwe Lodge facing the Mnemba reef.
Seven nights does a resort of this calibre justice — the villa, the dining, the diving and the spa take time to enjoy, and on a private island the seclusion is the point. Mnemba holds only a dozen or so rooms, so it books out a long way ahead. For the full rundown of the island's grand names, our best luxury hotels and resorts in Zanzibar guide goes property by property, and our Mnemba and private islands guide covers the atoll itself.
Price from US$6,500 per person sharing (7 days, 6 nights luxury villa or banda, most meals, return transfers including the island boat; international flights extra). Mnemba Island runs past US$2,000 per night. Best season: June–October and December–February. Ideal for: Milestone celebrations, luxury travellers, those wanting total privacy.
9. Safari & Zanzibar Beach Combo — 10 Days
Best for: The classic East African trip — a Serengeti safari first, then Zanzibar to unwind.
The finest way to use Zanzibar is as the beach half of a bush-and-beach trip, and it pairs more naturally than almost any beach in the region. A few nights on safari in the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater or the southern Tanzanian parks, then a short domestic flight to Zanzibar for a week on the sand, makes a holiday with both the wildlife and the rest. The timing lines up beautifully — the best Zanzibar beach weather from June to October is also the heart of the Serengeti season, including the river crossings of the wildebeest migration.
Ten days carries the two halves comfortably — three or four nights in the bush, five or six on the beach. We handle the domestic flight between the Serengeti and Zanzibar so the switch is a single easy travel day, and we match the beach half to the safari — a quiet villa after a busy game-viewing week, or a lively northern beach for a more active pair. Our dedicated safari and Zanzibar beach combo guide sets out the routings and lodges, our Zanzibar safari packages guide covers the full itineraries, and our luxury safari and beach combinations guide covers the wider bush-and-beach picture across Africa.
Price from US$5,500 per person sharing (10 days, safari lodge and Zanzibar beach resort, most meals on safari, domestic flights between bush and beach; international flights extra). Best season: June–October suits both the safari and Zanzibar. Ideal for: First-time and repeat Africa travellers who want wildlife and beach.
10. Grand Zanzibar & Pemba Two-Island Holiday — 10 Days
Best for: The complete archipelago at a slower pace — the main island paired with quiet, green Pemba.
For a longer, slower holiday, the best of the archipelago is a two-island trip that pairs Unguja, the main island, with Pemba, its quieter green sister to the north. Pemba is hillier, far less developed and ringed by some of the best wall-diving in the Indian Ocean — the Pemba Channel drops off sharply, and resorts such as The Manta Resort (home of the famous underwater room) and Fundu Lagoon give it a quiet, grown-up feel. Pair a few nights there with a week on Unguja's beaches and Stone Town, and you have the full archipelago.
This is the trip for travellers making the journey who want to know the islands properly, and especially for divers. Ten days lets you settle into both rather than rushing. We build the short inter-island flight into the day — a scenic hop timed to a relaxed morning — so the move between islands adds to the trip, and we match the two stays to the mood you want on each.
Price from US$3,800 per person sharing (10 days, Unguja and Pemba stays, half-board, all inter-island flights and transfers; international flights extra). Best season: June–October and December–February for the best diving visibility. Ideal for: Longer holidays, divers, repeat visitors who want two islands.
Honeymoon, Luxury, Family, All-Inclusive or Couples — Which Package Is Right for You?
The words travellers use most for a Zanzibar holiday overlap, but they point to different trips. Here is how we read them when we plan:
- Honeymoon — a beachfront villa, a sunset dhow and dinners on the sand, on the quiet north or northeast coast.
- Luxury — the private Mnemba atoll and the grand beach villas — Zanzibar White Sand, The Residence, Matemwe Lodge — where the villas and the service set the standard.
- Family — a kids' club, family rooms, safe northern bays and the forest monkeys and spice farms, with child rates to keep the cost down.
- All-inclusive — one price covering meals, drinks and watersports, best at Riu Palace, Dream of Zanzibar and the larger northern resorts.
- Couples — a quiet, grown-up resort and a slower pace, often a boutique beach hotel or an adults-only wing.
Most of our guests end up blending two of these — a luxury honeymoon, or a family week with Stone Town built in. Tell us which words matter most to you and we will match the coast, the resort and the transfers to them.

When to Go — and When to Book
Zanzibar is warm year round, and the seasons are set by two monsoons rather than by temperature. June to October is the long dry season — cooler, drier, breezier and the most popular window, and it lines up neatly with the Serengeti safari season for a bush-and-beach trip. December to February is hot and mostly dry, with calm, clear water that suits diving and snorkelling. The long rains fall roughly mid-March to May, when some smaller beach places close for repairs, and the short rains come through November. One local truth worth planning around: the southeast coast has a strong tide that goes out a long way twice a day, while the northern beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa stay swimmable through it. For the full month-by-month picture, see our best time to visit Zanzibar guide.
Peak weeks — the South African and European school holidays and the festive season — sell out early, and the small grand resorts and Mnemba Island book out six to twelve months ahead whatever the season, simply because they hold so few rooms. For those, book well in advance. For a beach week at a larger resort or a value stay on the southeast coast, three to four months is usually enough lead time, and that is where the best value sits. If your dates are flexible, the shoulder weeks are when the resorts run their free-nights and honeymoon deals.
Why Book Your Zanzibar Holiday With Beyond Africa
We plan private Indian Ocean and East African travel year round, and Zanzibar is a short flight and a familiar island for us. We know which coast suits a honeymoon and which suits a family, which all-inclusive boards earn their keep and when a half-board rate with meals out is the better week, how the tide works on each beach, where the dolphins and the turtles are, and how to time a Stone Town stay around the markets. That means we can match the coast, the resort and the room to your trip honestly, pair the island with a Serengeti safari when you want both, and handle the transfers and the day trips so your days are spent on the beach rather than on the admin.
