The best all-round months for an African safari are July to October, the peak of the dry season, when wildlife is easiest to see and the Great Migration crosses the Mara. But the ideal month depends on your goals — value, birding, the calving or specific regions — so here is every month ranked and explained.
The best months: July to October
These are the flagship safari months across most of the continent. Dry conditions concentrate wildlife, the Great Migration reaches Kenya, and weather is clear and comfortable. September and October are the driest and best for sheer game density, though hotter. Expect peak prices and busier camps — book six to twelve months ahead.
Excellent value: May, June and November
The shoulder months deliver most of the dry-season advantages at lower prices. May and June are fresh and green after the rains, with thinning crowds. November brings the first storms, migrant birds and newborn impala. These are our favourite months for travellers who want quality wildlife without peak-season prices.
The green-season gems: January to March
Do not overlook the early year. The southern Serengeti calving (late January to March) is the best predator action of the year, and birding across the continent peaks. Landscapes are emerald, camps are quiet and rates are low. This is the connoisseur's season — ideal for photographers and returning travellers.
The trickier months: April
April is the heart of the long rains in East Africa, when some camps close and roads can be difficult. That said, it is beautifully green, exceptional value and excellent for birding, and southern Africa remains very good. If you travel in April, favour southern Africa or higher-ground regions and accept some rain.
How to choose your month
Match the month to your priority. For guaranteed big game and the migration, choose July to October. For value, choose May, June or November. For the calving and birding, choose January to March. For combining with the Cape, choose the southern summer. When in doubt, the shoulder months rarely disappoint.
