The quick take
Moivaro Coffee Plantation Lodge is the kind of place you are grateful for at the start and the end of a safari rather than the middle. It sits seven kilometres out of Arusha on a working coffee farm — forty acres of tropical garden with Mount Meru standing behind it — and it is about a fifty-minute drive from Kilimanjaro airport. That location is the whole point. You land tired off a long flight, a driver brings you here, and instead of a city hotel you wake up in a quiet cottage with coffee bushes outside the window and a fire laid in the grate.
It is not a safari lodge in the game-viewing sense — there are no big animals on the property, and it does not pretend otherwise. What it is, is a comfortable, green, well-run base for the first and last nights of a northern-circuit trip, with a proper coffee tour on the doorstep and Arusha National Park close enough for a day out. Forty thatched cottages, family rooms, a pool among the trees, farm-grown food, and staff who have been doing arrivals and departures for years. For what it sets out to do, it does it well.
The rooms
There are forty rooms, and they are cottages, not hotel rooms — thatched brick, spread out through the garden so each feels its own. Every one has a private veranda facing the grounds, a fireplace for the cool Arusha evenings, an en-suite bathroom, a writing desk, ceiling fans and a mosquito net over the bed. The feel is homely and solid rather than designed-to-impress: good beds, enough space, and the quiet that comes from being set apart in a garden rather than stacked in a block.
The layout suits different groups. There are single and double cottages for couples and solo travellers, family rooms with interconnecting doors, and a private house for a larger party that wants to stay together. The detail that sets Moivaro apart from a city hotel, though, is the day rooms — rooms kept for travellers who arrive early or leave late and just need somewhere to shower, rest and repack between flights. On a trip where the flights home often leave late at night, that one thing can turn a miserable last day into a comfortable one.
The main area and the food
The heart of the lodge is a restaurant, a lounge and a bar grouped near the gardens, with a fire that gets lit most evenings — Arusha sits at altitude, and the nights can be genuinely cold. Meals are a mix of African and continental cooking, and because the farm keeps its own vegetable gardens, a lot of what lands on the plate is grown a short walk away. It is honest, home-style food rather than fine dining, which is exactly right for a place where you are either recovering from a flight or heading out before dawn.
Practical touches matter more here than flourishes, and Moivaro has them. Breakfast is cooked to order even for an early start, lunch boxes and a flask go with you when you leave for the parks, and there is complimentary coffee — the farm's own — on the go through the day. Afternoon tea in the garden is a gentle way to fill the gap on an arrival day. With meals served either in the restaurant or out on the veranda, you can eat watching the garden settle for the evening.
The grounds and the farm
Moivaro's forty acres are the reason to choose it over a hotel in town. The gardens are tropical and well-kept, threaded with a two-kilometre walking and jogging trail that is a good way to shake off a long flight or stretch out before a day in a vehicle. There is a swimming pool set among the trees, an outdoor fireplace for the evenings, a spa offering massages, a children's playground, a gift shop and laundry, with WiFi in the public areas. A conference centre about ten minutes' walk away handles the occasional group, and the lodge runs weddings, but none of that intrudes on a normal stay.
The working coffee farm is woven through all of it. The guided coffee tour is the signature thing to do here — you walk the rows of arabica, pick ripe cherries, and follow the beans through drying and roasting before drinking a cup on the veranda. It is a relaxed, genuinely interesting half-day that suits most ages, and it is one of the better versions of the coffee experience around Arusha precisely because it happens on the estate you are staying on.
Why it works as an arrival and departure base
Most people get the shape of a northern-circuit trip slightly wrong at the edges — they either book a city hotel for the first night and spend it listening to Arusha traffic, or they try to drive straight from the plane into the parks and arrive wrecked. Moivaro fixes both. The fifty-minute transfer from Kilimanjaro airport is short enough to manage after a long-haul flight, and the lodge is quiet and green enough that you actually sleep. In the morning you are rested, fed and loaded into the vehicle for the drive west.
The same logic runs in reverse at the end. Coming out of the Serengeti, you are usually dusty and tired, with a late international flight to kill time before. A last night or a day room at Moivaro gives you a shower, a proper meal, a swim and a few hours in the garden before the airport run — a far better end to a trip than hanging around a terminal. It is a small thing that makes the whole itinerary work better, and it is why we build so many Tanzania trips to start and finish here.
Arusha National Park and days out
If you have a spare day at either end, the lodge arranges the day trips worth doing from Arusha. The pick is Arusha National Park, about forty minutes away under Mount Meru: giraffe moving through the glades, buffalo and warthog, black-and-white colobus in the forest, and flamingos on the Momella Lakes. Because there are no lions, the park allows walking safaris on foot with an armed ranger — a gentle, genuine first taste of the bush, and good for families and nervous first-timers. You are back at the lodge for dinner.
Closer in, Lake Duluti is a twenty-minute drive for a canoe and some quiet birding, the Materuni waterfalls and a Chagga coffee walk make a fuller active day on the Kilimanjaro foothills, and the Cultural Heritage Centre and Maasai Market in Arusha fill a last afternoon. None of these needs an early start, so they slot easily around an arrival or departure day. For the full rundown of the town and its day trips, see our Arusha safari gateway guide.

The wider Moivaro group
Moivaro Coffee Plantation Lodge is the flagship of a small Tanzanian group, Moivaro Lodges & Tented Camps, that has run owner-managed lodges across the north since 1999. If you like the feel of this one, the group has places that slot neatly into a longer trip — KIA Lodge, a hilltop set of cottages barely five minutes from Kilimanjaro airport with Kili and Meru views, is handy for a very late arrival or a dawn departure; Lake Natron Tented Camp sits out in the Rift Valley near Ol Doinyo Lengai on community-owned land; and there are camps at Lake Manyara, Lake Eyasi, the northern Serengeti and Ngorongoro's forest edge, plus beach lodges on Zanzibar. We will tell you honestly which of them earn a night on your particular route and which do not.
Getting there
Nearly everyone reaches Moivaro through Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), with a driver meeting the flight for the fifty-minute transfer to the lodge. From Moivaro it is a short hop west into Arusha, a slightly longer run to Arusha Airport for a light-aircraft flight into the Serengeti, or a four to six-hour drive to the Serengeti gate if you are travelling overland through Tarangire and Ngorongoro. We arrange the airport transfer, the safari vehicle and the timing together, so the arrival after a long flight and the departure at the end both run without fuss.
Rates
Moivaro is quoted on request, as rates move with season and room type. As a 2026/2027 guide, expect from around US$120 to US$180 per person per night sharing for a cottage with breakfast, with family rooms and the private house priced to the group, and modest charges for day rooms used between flights. Because the lodge works best as part of a wider trip, we almost always price it inside a full northern-circuit itinerary — the Arusha nights, the transfers and the safari costed together — rather than as a standalone booking. These figures are indicative; we confirm the exact rate and what each stay includes in writing when we quote your dates.
