For the greatest elephant concentrations, travel in the dry season, roughly July to October, when herds gather along permanent rivers and waterholes. Botswana's Chobe, Zimbabwe's Hwange and Kenya's Amboseli deliver the largest and most reliable elephant viewing in Africa.
Why the dry season concentrates elephants
Elephants drink up to 200 litres a day, so as seasonal pans dry out they are drawn to permanent water. In the late dry season, hundreds — sometimes over a thousand — can gather along the Chobe River or at Hwange's pumped waterholes in a single afternoon. It is one of the great wildlife spectacles on the continent.
Best places for elephants
Chobe in Botswana holds one of Africa's densest elephant populations, best seen from a boat on the river. Hwange in Zimbabwe is famous for huge dry-season herds at its waterholes. Amboseli in Kenya offers big tuskers against Kilimanjaro. Tarangire in Tanzania and the Addo region in South Africa round out the best elephant destinations.
Month by month
August to October is the peak, when water is scarcest and herds are largest. June and July are excellent and slightly cooler. In the green season (December to April), elephants disperse into the bush to feed on fresh growth, so numbers at any one spot are lower, though family groups with tiny calves are a delight.
The Chobe river experience
A boat cruise on the Chobe River in the late afternoon is the definitive elephant experience: herds crossing to island grazing, youngsters play-fighting in the shallows and long lines of elephants coming down to drink at sunset. Pair it with Victoria Falls for one of Africa's finest short safaris.
How to plan an elephant safari
Base yourself where elephants concentrate — a Chobe riverfront lodge, a Hwange waterhole camp or an Amboseli tented camp — in the late dry season. Combine river and land viewing where possible, allow at least three nights, and travel in September or October for the sheer scale of the herds.
| Months | Season | Elephant numbers | Highlight | Best region |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aug–Oct | Peak dry | Excellent | Huge herds at water | Chobe, Hwange |
| Jun–Jul | Early dry | Very good | Cooler, gathering | Amboseli, Tarangire |
| May & Nov | Shoulder | Good | Value, quieter | Kruger, Addo |
| Dec–Apr | Green | Fair | Newborn calves | Widely dispersed |
