Peak season (roughly July to October) offers the easiest game viewing and the migration, but at the highest prices and with the biggest crowds. Shoulder season (May–June and November) delivers most of that quality at markedly lower prices with far fewer vehicles. For value-conscious travellers, the shoulder season is often the smartest choice.
What defines each season
Peak season is the heart of the dry winter, when wildlife concentrates at water and demand — and pricing — is at its maximum. Shoulder season sits on either side: the fresh, green weeks of May and June after the rains, and November, when the first storms arrive but the bush is not yet thick. Both offer strong wildlife with a softer price tag.
Price and availability
The gap is significant. Shoulder-season rates can run 20 to 40 percent below peak, and top camps that sell out a year ahead in peak season have space at shorter notice. If you want a specific sought-after lodge — or you are travelling as a family — the shoulder season stretches your budget considerably.
Wildlife and weather
In the shoulder months, game viewing is still very good: in May and June the bush is thinning and animals are increasingly visible, while November brings newborn impala and migrant birds. The weather is milder than peak in some respects, though November carries a chance of afternoon storms. You lose a little predictability, not much wildlife.
When peak season is worth it
Peak season earns its premium for specific goals: the Mara River crossings (late July to October), the absolute driest game viewing in September and October, and travel locked to school summer holidays. If a once-in-a-lifetime migration crossing is your dream, pay for peak and book early.
Our recommendation
Unless you are chasing the river crossings or tied to holidays, the shoulder season is the value sweet spot — near-peak wildlife, thinner crowds and meaningfully lower prices. May, June and November consistently deliver the best quality-to-cost ratio of the safari calendar.
